Week 3: Science experiments and drama!
This week we have been looking at the story of The Great Kapok Tree. It tells the story of a logger who falls asleep at the bottom of a Kapok tree. A number of animals then visit the man and tell him why we should save the Rainforest. We have been acting like the characters from the story and using drama to help us remember what the animals said to the logger.

Week 3: Year 3 learning for the week ahead...
This week in Year 3 we are going to look at the story 'The Great Kapok Tree' by Lynne Cherry. I don't want to give too much of the story away but this will start our study of finding out why the Rainforest is so important and the reasons why it needs to be saved! We will be using drama and drawings to help us retell the story. We will also look at the speech in the story. We will also try again with the VR headsets this week and visit an orangutan sanctuary in Borneo.
In Power Maths this week we will be using a number line to 1000. The children need to recognise the place value of each digit in a three-digit number (hundreds, tens, ones). They will be placing numbers on empty number lines and using their reasoning skills to answers questions. They will also be finding 1, 10 and 100 more or less than a number. It's fantastic to see how well Year 3 have settled in to the routine of Year 3 Power Maths. They have been using base ten equipment, hundreds tens and ones grids and whole part models to aid with their understanding of place value to 1000.

In Science this week we will be continuing looking at plants and will be finishing off our terrariums as well as starting a new experiment.
By the end of this week your child will have a new AR number and a book that correlates to this number.
Please do contact us if you have any questions about the week ahead or anything you would like to discuss with us.

Home Learning and Spelling - 10th September 2020
Year 3 Home learning,
10th September 2020
To be handed in by 17th September 2020.
Rainforest investigators: Can you survive the rainforest?
This week we have been investigating the animals that call the rainforest home as well as learning about the different layers and habitats you can find there. But could you survive?
For home learning we would like you to follow the flow chart to see if you can survive living there! See if you can take it in turns to read the questions and choices. Can you reach the end and survive?
Next week we will be reading a story about The Great Kapok Tree. A great picture book which addresses the issue of rainforest conservation.
Quick Quiz:
Can you name the four main layers of the Rainforest?

Fabulous Home Learning - 10th September 2020
Wow! Wow! Wow! What super home learners we have in year 3. The children have totally blown us away with their amazing home learning this week. Some have drawn, labelled, talked about, read, as well as written books, facts and poems. Expect some Marvellous Me points to be winging their way to you tomorrow. I will also be taking some pictures so that I can make a virtual display of what the children have achieved.
Please remember that home learning can take all forms. If you have a reticent home learner you could equally explore the topics involved in our home learning by talking about the themes, cuddling up with a book that relates to the learning or going on a visit somewhere to experience something that relates to our learning!
Look out for next week's challenge!

The bugman and our new class pet!!!
Well we had an inspiring this morning with a visit from Nick from Bugfest. He bought along some creatures that you can find in all layers of the Rainforest!
We saw scorpions, stick insects, millipedes, centipedes, giant snails, praying mantis and huge tarantulas. I was really impressed with Year 3's knowledge of the Rainforest already and it was fantastic to hear the children tell Nick the facts they have learnt from their home learning. Below are a selection of pictures from today but I have many more! Keep on scrolling to the end to see our class pet...

Week 2- Year 3 learning for the week ahead
The week ahead in Year 3...
This week we have an exciting visitor...The Bug Man! Nick from Bugfest will be showing the children (socially distant) a number of creatures that you find in the Rainforest. We will then use this information and research other animals on the internet to make a Rainforest animal fact file.
On Monday afternoon we are going to split into two groups. One group will do PE with Mrs Hall (please could all PE kits be stored in your child's locker) and the other half of the class will be going to be outside with me doing Science, then we will swap. I don't anticipate needing different clothes for this session as it is dry, however if you would prefer your child to wear wellies then please place them on the rack outside the classroom.
On Friday we started the Year 3 Power Maths book. For the next few weeks we will be focussing on place value. In the mornings the children have a times table focus. At the moment we are recapping 2, 5 and 10s but we will move on to making sure they are secure in 3, 4 and 8s.
On Tuesday afternoon Mr Treble will be leading PE. I have had a couple of parents ask about swimming. We will be giving an update on swimming soon but whilst we are not swimming we will be having an extra PE session and outside learning.
Can't wait for the busy week ahead! We will blog some pictures tomorrow of our visitors.
