First week of school orchestra!

Just a reminder that orchestra begins this Thursday 28th February!

Those instrumentalists I need this week are Violinists and pianists. If your child was selected by their music teacher they would have received a letter from me inviting them to attend. Children need to come to the school hall for 3.30pm, bring a snack and drink, and then we’ll rehearse. Finish time is 4.15pm; please come around the back of the hall for pick-ups. I’m looking forward to it!

 Thank you, Mrs Mewett.

Clubs this term...

Clubs have begun really well this term; the children are attending lots of fun clubs either held in lunchtimes or after school.

Dance club is popular as ever, Choir is also very strong this term; Mrs Gallego was stunned by the amazing sound she heard last week!  The beginner Recorder club has also begun now, with some very keen and eager children who are already moving on well with their learning!

If your child has recorder lessons or Ukele lessons with Lucy then please ensure your payments per lesson (£1 per week) are handed into the school office asap.

If your child would like to join any of the above then please see me or the school office and we’ll put you in touch with the adult running the club, the more the merrier!

Learning about Islam

Many of the children at St Thomas's School in Bolton are Muslims. Today we looked at Muslim artefacts learned about the 5 Pillars of Islam and looked at images of mosques in the UK. Here is a photo of one of the mosques some of the children from St Thomas's go to for prayer. There is also a new mosque that has just been  completed very near the school.

"Pen Friends" in Bolton

We have been writing letters to children at a school in Bolton, in Lancashire. Mr Farrington will be delivering the letters personally next week and meeting the teachers and pupils of Year 3 i n St Thomas' School, Halliwell, Bolton.
Cocoa Farming
The Year 3 children had fun learning about chocolate on Friday.
They found out about the processes involved and acted out being farmers faced with the challenges of growing and selling cocoa beans for a decent profit to themselves.
Oh,... and they got to eat some chocolate (-something that the cocoa farmers and their families may never have the chance to do!)

Learning about Judaism

The children in Year 3 had a fantastic time learning about Judaism and specifically about the Jewish festival of Pesach (Passover). We tried the symbolic foods of the Seder meal and learned about how Jewish people are reminded about important aspects of ancient Jewish history and the story of Moses leading the people from Egypt.

Home Learning - World Map (Friday 8th Feb)

World Map
I have asked the children to have a go at putting the names of the continents and oceans on a World Map. To do this they will need to look at a World map. They might like to shade the continents in different colours.
There was some fantastic work done last week when the children were asked to label a map of Europe.

Year 3 Library Books

Please can you have a check at home for any school library books that you may have. According to our computerised system, some of the children have had the same library book for rather a long time.
Thank you.

Moses and the 10 plagues of Egypt

Today Year 3 learnt about Moses leading the Jews out of slavery in Egypt. We talked about the 10 plagues sent by God. Can the children find out all of the 10 plagues including the angel of death which "passed over" the houses of the Jewish people.? Next week Year 3 will be having an exciting day all about the Passover Festival (Pesach in Hebrew) led by a good friend of the school who is a practising Jew and teacher.

Perhaps they could label even more than 15.

As a safety issue can I remind all children they MUST wear shin pads when attending football clubs on Monday (after school) and Wednesday (lunchtime). Thank you.
