Award assembly 22.10.15

Today we had our first of the year ‘Award assembly’. This is the assembly when we ask teachers and their teams to select children who they think have worked particularly hard during this first part of the year in subject areas; writing, reading, maths, ICT, Creative arts, PE and displaying our Citizenship qualities.  Some awards have a certificate and a trophy to keep for half a term! You may have found one of these when you got home!

For our Reception parents; the awards can stay at home with your child until we send a letter inviting it back in for our next ‘Award assembly’.

Happy half term everyone, we will see you all back on Tuesday 3rd November!

Ships and Seafarers

Next half term there will be a nautical flavour to our topic work. We will be using the theme of "Ships and Seafarers" to explore different areas of the curriculum.

Home Learning - Thursday 22nd October,- Half Term Holiday

1. Write about “Reasons For and Reasons Against Wearing a Uniform When You Come To School”.
We have discussed this in class and shared examples of our ideas.
There are also some statements to look at to help me with this writing.
Learning objectives –
-To develop idea of considering 2 opposing points of view.
-Writing a balanced argument which looks at different opinions

I have written about the reasons for and against having a school uniform.

2. Handwriting
We have given the children a handwriting booklet. It would be great if they could spend a little time (perhaps every other day) working on their handwriting.

Interesting Farm Visit

The Year 3 Class had an enjoyable, interesting visit to Maiden Castle Farm today. The children learned about how the crops are stored after the harvest and prepared for the cows to eat. We went to see the cows in their shed too.
Many Thanks again to Hazel for her informative tour of the farm.

Year 3 Home Learning - Fri 9th Oct

Home Learning        Friday October 9th        Year 3
The children have been finding out about things that people have for breakfast. They are considering where things are grown and what happens to them before they arrive on the breakfast table, for example shipping, processing, slaughtering, refining, packaging, drying, bottling, transporting – depending on the food/drink.
The children need to do another example of a breakfast food like the one that we did at school. (We did a bit about bacon at school.)
- Examples: Marmalade, eggs, Corn Flakes, tea, milk, etc
Thank you for your help.

Year 3's Fruit Creation

This morning the children in year 3 made a super "Fruit Creation". This was a spectacular arrangement of Fruit Kebabs blossoming from a watermelon basket.
The children enjoyed arranging their fruit,- but, it has to be said, -the best part was eating it after lunch!

Well done for a Fantastic Harvest Assembly

The children in Year 3 had lots of fun doing the Harvest Assembly with Year 4 today. We thought that they sang beautifully! A special "Well done!" to Bruno and Archie for winning the Kingston Maurward competition. The Year 3 class will be able to visit Kingston Maurward in the Summer Term for an educational adventure.
Did you notice our "Down on the farm" artwork?- Made out of seeds and cereals.

Our daily bread

We had a lot of fun eating the delicious bread that the children brought in over the course of the week on a daily basis. Well done to Luke, Sophie, Emily, William, Hannah, Joshua, Bruno, Daisy, Megan, Elsie, Darcey, Mason, Harris and Ruby for bringing in some bread for us to try.

Rocks coming home

Today some of the children  have chosen to bring home  the rocks that they collected on their trip last week. We gathered most of these from the cutting near Bincombe where the new road has been built. These are part of the Purbeck Beds and were formed around 200 million years ago.

Learning about Judaism

The children in Year 3 have been enjoying learning about aspects of  Judaism in their R.E. sessions. We found out about the special prayer called the schema. This is kept in a little decorated case on the door posts of a house. This case is called a mezuzah.
I have also told them the story of Moses and how the Jewish people fled from Egypt after the plaques.

A Mezuzah

Delicious Bread! Well done

Well done to those children who have taken part in Mrs. Mewett's "Bread Making Challenge" - set as a "Home Leaning" activity.
We have enjoyed finding out about just how many ways there are of making different breads and sampling your creations.

Indian Rice Farming

This morning, Mr. Farrington joined us to tell us all about Rice Farming in India.

This fits in with the work we are beginning about "Farm to Fork"; learning about where the food we eat actually comes from and what processes it goes through before reaching our plates!

We had to listen carefully and write down some interesting sentences about the things we had learned.

How tall is the tallest person that lives in your house?
Measure in m/cm

How much does your breakfast cup/glass contain? (ml) Estimate or measure

9
How many millilitres are there in your bottle of ketchup? / or tin of soup? Have a look at the label on the bottle

10
If a soup/cereal bowl was full, how many ml of liquid could it hold?

Year 3 - Handwriting and presentation of written work

We are having an increased focus on handwriting and the neat presentation of our written work.
We are encouraging the children to check that they have an appropriate pencil grip and that they are sitting with a good posture - with their non-writing hand steadying the paper/book effectively.
Please can you reinforce these messages with any writing that the children do at home.
I am hoping to give out lots of certificates this week to children who have worked hard and made good progress.
Thank you,
DM

This week's visits

Our Geology /and Railway Trips this week were a great success. The children were excellent! - very enthusiastic and well-behaved. We had a really interesting time learning from the local environment. We were blessed with perfect weather too. Thank you to the parents and grandparents that come along. I hope that you had an enjoyable day too.

This picture shows one of the children with their arm inside a cylindrical thromobolite at Portesham Rocket Quarry. This is a fossilised remains of a tree trunk.
