Year 3 - replica ancient Greek vases

In our Art lessons we have been looking at the artwork on ancient Greek vases. These tell us a good deal about the lives of the ancient Greeks, and about how their religion and characters in stories were important to them. We have had a go at creating our own replica ancient Greek vases. We have used a range of modelling and decorating techniques.

Home Learning Activity Year 3 – week of Wednesday 31st January

We have asked the children to create an “Eco Poster” that focuses on an environmental theme of their choice.

(Some possibilities:  “Don’t Drop Litter”, “Save Energy – Don’t Waste Electricity”, “Stop the Elephant Hunters!” “Recycle Your Household Waste”, “Polar Bears in Danger from Global Warming”, “Put Your Fruit Waste in the Compost Bin” – and many more, of course.)

Year 3 - Writing an Adventure Story

Writing an Adventure Story
The children are going to be having a go at writing their own stories in the style of an ancient myth. We have talked about the key elements required for this: - having a hero or heroine that needs to go on a quest to find something/ rescue someone, etc  -  and who has lots of adventures along the way (involving mythical creatures and magical assistance, etc)
The children have planned out their stories and are going to be writing a section each day this week.
I will be modelling the writing of my own story to help the children to structure and organise their story-writing; and to draw attention to how to develop characters, settings and the plot.

It would be great if you could chat to your child about their story (– the plot, the characters, the monsters) and so help them to have a good, secure idea about the content that they are going to develop over the week.
We planned out our ideas for our stories using a string (to represent the story-line) and "bits-and-bobs" (to represent the settings, characters and key objects)

Home Learning - Year 3 Wednesday 24th Januar

Wonderful World
For their “Home Learning” activity this week I have suggested that the children make up a poem under the title “What a Wonderful World”. They should try to include images and ideas that make them feel happy and put a smile on their faces.

In class we have listened to “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong and talked about the words in the song.

Many Thanks,

Duncan MacBean

Home Learning – Year 3 Wed 17th Jan

Mathematics
Write down as many different totals as possible that you can get from two different coins:
(There are a lot of answers!)

Show your answers like this:
1p+ 2p= 3p
1p+ 5p= 6p

Have you been systematic in your approach to this?

Scientific Model
The Year 3 Team are also keen that The Y3 children have a go at Mrs. Thorpe's competition leading up to our Science Week. (The week of Mon 5th Feb) :

"Can you make something that moves using energy?"
"You will need to think about environmental impact. Could you use recyclables? The models should be age appropriate and the children should work with a parent so that they are able to answer questions about how it was made and how it works."

Year 3 Daedalus and Icarus Writing

Today the children in Year 3 have been writing their own excerpt from the story of "Daedalus and Icarus".
Here are two of the targets that different groups of children were focusing on:
- I have been careful to use capital letters when they are needed, and careful not to use them when they are not necessary.
- I have retold part of the story of Daedalus and Icarus, using interesting vocabulary and combining some clauses to make longer sentences.
Please try to take a look in your child's Writing Book to see how they got on.

Year 3 - Money Mathematics

Next week in our Year 3 Mathematics lessons we are going to be looking at Maths that involves money.
Key learning objective from the National Curriculum for Year 3:

Add and subtract amounts of money to give change, using both £ and p in practical contexts.”

Year 3 Home learning - Wednesday 10th January

I have asked the children to have a go at shining a torch on an object on a table at home to take a look at the way a shadow is cast. What happens when the torch is moved around the object? What happens to the shadow when the torch is moved closer, or further away?

LO – Light source Investigation – I can identify a number of light sources.
I have also asked the children to add some more examples to the sources of light that we were talking about in our Science lesson.

                      Light source
(where light can come from)
Draw a picture.

Where might I find the light source?

Shapes - Year 3 Mathematics

In Year 3, our work in Mathematics this week has been about "Shapes".

Learning objectives and activities in lessons include:
Recognise 2-D shapes; describe, visualise, classify, draw and make the shapes
Draw and complete shapes with reflective symmetry; draw the reflection of a shape in a mirror line along one side
Describe the properties of and sort common 2-D shapes and 3-D shapes and recognise them in pictures
Identify and draw lines of symmetry
Make a “Right Angle Tester”l
Identify right angles in shapes and as quarter turns
Follow instructions using vocabulary related to position, direction and movement
Recognise and use right angles to describe turns and corners of shapes
During each lesson, spend a short time “turning through 90* in a clockwise and anti-clockwise direction.

Year Three ancient Greek Myths....and plastic bottle request

English Lessons
We are starting our English lessons this term by looking at some of the ancient Greek myths.
Today, we found out about the tragic story of Orpheus and Euridice.

We will be using these exciting stories to provide an interesting content for developing Reading and Writing skills.
Later this half-term, we will be having a go at writing our own stories in the style of an ancient Greek myth!
Art Work
Alongside our work in English, we will be looking at pictures of ancient Greek pottery (decorated with scenes of their stories and their daily lives). We will be making out own "replicas" using plastic bottles covered in "papier mache".

I would be very grateful if you could provide a plastic bottle (or two) so that we can transform them into works of art. (plain, cylindrical 2-litre plastic bottles would best suit our purposes.)
