Year 3 - Super learners and home learning - 27.2.2020

What a great day we've had in year 3 today!  From cracking multiplication and division facts including remainders, with use of arrays to writing factual reports about the Roman invasion using paragraphing!  But we didn't stop there!  Miss Chant gave us an insight into Roman mosaics, we started learning about our families in French and began learning a song which has some rather interesting facts regarding the Ancient Romans' habits!!
It really was the best day to come and get to know year 3 a bit better.  Lots more inspired learning to come...

Home learning this week has two parts:
1.  To draw bar chart using the data collected earlier this week about your favourite pancake toppings.

2. To find out 10 amazing facts about Roman Soldiers, there is some information to help you along the way, but please feel free to use other sources to research some fun facts.  This activity will support learning in Humanities and Literacy next week.
We have more copies of this home learning, just in case it has got lost in transit!

Looking forward to seeing you all again tomorrow!

Year 3- information about the week and our visit to Rome!

Welcome to Spring 2!
WOW we have had some outstanding shields in already this week. Thank you to all of the parents that have supported this. Please can we have all of these in by next Friday as we want to use them for some of our learning.

This week we have started to learn about the Romans. Today the children learnt about how the Romans invaded lots of European countries. We used the VR headsets to visit Rome, the Colosseum  a Roman military camp but also see how the Romans engineered buildings such as a Pantheon and aqueducts. This was a fantastic immersive experience for them and they were really impressed! The other half of the class will get to experience this tomorrow.

Today Miss Chant, who is a student teacher with us for a week, taught Year 3 about Pancake day and Lent. We then celebrated this learning by eating pancakes!

On Friday afternoon Year 3 and 4 have an exciting outing up to The Thomas Hardy School. We have been invited to watch a dance performance about plastic pollution. We will have an early lunch and walk to the school and will be back to school by the end of the day.

Year 3 -End of Spring term 1

We were treated to two wonderful assemblies today. We had a magical ending to the day with a visit from Magic Andy and we started the day with Year 1's class assembly.
It was an emotional time for many of the children as we also said goodbye to Mr Gibson who is starting a new school after half term. For most of the children Mr Gibson was their first teacher at POW in reception and he has continued to work with many children through his excellent sports coaching.

Home Learning
My apologies, as I forgot to give the children the hard copies of their home learning but the details are below:

Slytherin & Hufflepuff: Over half term we would like you to make a CELTIC shield.

Ravenclaw & Gryffindor: Over half term we would like you to make a Roman shield.

During Spring 2 we will be using your shields for our famous battle!

After Half term
Today was the last day of term as Friday 14th February is an INSET day.
All children return to school on Monday 24th February.

Today was my last day teaching year 3 as after half term I will be teaching year 1.
It has been a genuine pleasure and joy to work with your children and watch them progress over this first half of the year.
Miss Johnson will be teaching year 3 on Thursdays and Fridays after half term and has been getting to know the children over the past few weeks.
Next term looks set to be a very exciting term for year 3 as Miss Johnson and Mrs Thorpe have lots of interesting and engaging Roman themed activities planned.

We hope you all have a lovely half term break.

Kind regards,
Ms Browne and the Year 3 team.

Magical Martin

Welcome to our inspired to learn magical themed week. The children had an amazing Monday! We watched Martin Rees with the whole school and then we got a special treat as he gave a magic show to Year 3. Martin explained how it is really important to work hard and be kind. The children loved the show!

This week the children will be working in groups to make a shadow puppet theatre of the story of 'Leon and the place between'. The story tells of a little boy who goes to the circus and is transported to the 'place between', where you disappear to when there is a magic trick. It has beautiful pictures and descriptions.

We were informed today that the swimming pool will not be open for tomorrow afternoon. We will instead be doing some Science.

No need to bring a vegetable

Good morning everyone!

Just to let you know that we will no longer be making the stew on either Monday or Tuesday so you do not need to bring a vegetable. Apologies if you bought any especially for it. The windy weather is too dangerous for us to have a fire. We will do this next term at some point. We will instead have some fun and exciting activities inside. Please could I ask you to take your wellies home over the half term. We would like to see how many are old wellies and recycle them.

Many thanks

Mrs Thorpe

Year 3 Home Learning and forthcoming dates

Good Morning everyone,

The children have continued to be fascinated by the life of the Celts and the story of Boudicca this week. They imagined what life would have been like during Celtic times and they prepared and delivered some passionate speeches as Celtic warriors defending their land. Next term's topic will be the Romans,

In RE we finished our unit on Judaism and Passover with a Seder meal. We discussed the symbolism of each food item on the Seder plate and I was very impressed with their willingness to try the different foods - including horseradish!

Home Learning
For this week's home learning we would like children to experience making different shadows, experimenting with shadows of different shapes and sizes. Children are welcome to print or email photos or videos of their shadows or shadow puppet theatres to Mrs Thorpe:  b.thorpe@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk

With Mr Gibson's last day at the POW fast approaching, if you would like to share a drawing, message or photo to thank him or wish him well please either email them to me c.browne@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk or give paper drawings to Claire West by Wednesday 12th February.

Save any big pieces of cardboard
The half term home learning will be for children to make their own Roman shield. More details will be sent home next week but ideally the shield will be big enough for the children to hold up and hide behind like a Roman soldier.

Upcoming dates
Monday 10th February - Please bring in forest school clothes and a vegetable for stewing
Thursday 13th February - Last day of term
Friday 14th February - INSET day
Monday 24th February - All children return to school
Thursday 27th February - Parent forum 8.45am
Thursday 5th March - World book day
Friday 27th March - Year 3 assembly

Please label all items of clothing
Happily the sun made a welcome appearance in the sky this week and with it lots of jumpers were deposited in our jumper dumper.
Unfortunately, quite a few jumpers have not made their way back to their owners as they were not labeled.
Please could I request that all clothing has an up to date name label in it so that we can return them to your child. Feel free to have a look through our jumper dumper for any missing jumpers.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,
The year 3 team.

Delma visits Y3

Well it is not every day you have a Celtic woman in your classroom!! Today Delma arrived in Year 3 asking for their help. They needed to write to the Celtic Queen Boudicca to ask her to form her army to defend against the Romans that are on their way! The children started to write some fantastic letters which they will finish and edit tomorrow.

In Maths this week we are focusing on eight times tables. The children are getting much better at this and understanding if you can multiply then you can divide. If you get a chance please do go on TT rockstars and encourage the counting in fours and eights.

Thank you to everyone that came to the parents evenings this week. If I still haven’t seen you please do speak to myself or Ms Browne to arrange a time.

Next week we will be having a fire outside and making a stew. Could I ask for ALL children to have their Forest School kits in on Monday and Tuesday, we will choose the best  day to go out, depending on the weather! We are also asking for the children to bring one vegetable for the stew. But only one please eg. one small carrot or a small onion. If it is already chopped up then that would be fantastic! Anything you might put in your stew at home.

Many thanks
Mrs Thorpe
