Year 3: Farm trip tomorrow and the week ahead

Tomorrow is the start of our Food, faith and farming fortnight. During the next two weeks we will be learning our harvest song, doing art work and learning about different faiths and that they do during this season.

Tomorrow afternoon Year 3 are off to the farm. The children can wear home trousers but normal school tops please. Wellies are advised. It’s looking like it might be a nice afternoon so hopefully we shouldn’t need rain coats!

I will blog some more updates about the week tomorrow 😊 if anybody has any red/orange/yellow wool that they don’t use or even has a Granny who might have an abundance then we would love to take it off your hands please for a little project we are starting on Wednesday. Also any dry flat leaves that you see on your walk to school please do collect them for us 🍁

Thank you and see you all tomorrow

Year 3: Reminder about books

Hello everyone

Could we please have AR books in school everyday as there are times each day where we do read and there have been quite a lot of children not bringing in their books.

Many thanks

Year 3 Week 3: The week ahead

This week we will be starting to look at fronted adverbials.

In Power Maths we will be learning to compare numbers to 1,000. The picture below shows an example of the page from tomorrow's lesson

In Science this week we will be moving onto a new topic of forces. A knowledge organiser for this will be coming home this week.

This week in Forest School (weather dependant) the children will learn how the stone age/bronze age people lit fires. We will be having popcorn, if your child cannot have this please do let me know and I can arrange something different for them.

Some pre warning about a dressing up day. We have our Food, Faith and Farming fortnight starting soon and the children will be invited to 'dress like a farmer'. More information about this will be shared soon.

Week 3 here we come!

Year 3: Home learning and spellings for week 2.

Home learning and spellings for week 2 (17th September). Home learning will be marked and collected on Tuesday the 21st September and the spellings will be checked on Friday 25th. If you have. any questions please feel free to email me to ask. Home learning= Marvellous me. Spellings=house point.

Year 3: End of week 2!

This week the children have been learning about inverted commas and how to use them when writing speech. We have used the story of 'The Stone Age Boy' and added our own speech into the story. I was really impressed with how well ev
eryone picked this up and how well they are presenting in their books.

In Power Maths we have been using our base ten equipment to to help us to find our  1, 10 and 100 more/less than a number. This is an example of todays questions below:

We had a visit from the tortoises yesterday. The children were thinking of some brilliant questions to find out more about them. We have linked this visit with our BLP and thinking about being Reggie the resilient tortoise. Which I have to say so many children are showing these qualities this week.

Praise assembly certificates today go to the following children:
-Grace and Amber for amazing inverted comma and adverbs work.
-Ava gets our Reggie of the week for being absorbed in her Maths work
-Rufus for trying so hard and already getting a golden snitch with his reading.

Well done to all children that have received the praise assembly certificates today

Year 3: Natural dye wool workshop

Well what a glorious day for a wool workshop!

This afternoon Jo form Dorset Wool explained to the children how people from the Bronze and Iron Age would use plants such as Weld and Madder to dye their wool and linens.

It was amazing to see the yarn change colour!

The children even had a go at making yarn themselves by spinning wool.

And they also used a peg loom to make a small mat using Jo's wool from her Portland sheep.

Why not ask your child something that they have learnt this afternoon?

Thank you to Jo from Dorset Wool. We will definitely be using the new techniques in our learning.

Year 3: Reminder about tomorrow

Good evening. Just a quick reminder that it is our Wool workshop and Forest School session tomorrow so please can all children have a long sleeve top, trousers, coat/jumper and wellies. There were quite a lot of children last week without coats or a jumper and no wellies. We will need them tomorrow please 😊

Thank you

Year 3 Week 2: The week ahead

This week we will be delving into our Stone Age topic and looking at the story of the Stone Age boy. We will be thinking about what life would have been like and how ou4lives compare.

On Wednesday we have a special visitor in our Forest School session. Jo from Dorset Wool will be working with us and teaching use about natural dyes. I will try and blog some pictures of this! (I’m very excited about the workshop!)

Last week the children all did a AR star reading test. Everyone does this every half term. It is a series of comprehension questions, from this they will get their AR number which they can take out books from the library. Your child’s number may be slightly lower at the beginning of the term as they are settling back in to answering questions about the texts they have just read. I have said that if they get 100% in 4 quizzes then I will move them up. Every book that is read and if the children have got 80% or more in the quiz then they will receive a quaffle for their special pouch. It’s great to see so many of these already!! For the children that are reading longer books then their AR points are more of a focus. With this in mind, for every 50 points they get they will receive a golden snitch. We encourage reading in whether it’s being read to or listening to stories every day.

Any questions please do ask.

Year 3 Week 1: Home learning and spellings

Every child has come home with a home learning folder. In this folder is the sheet below and a piece of paper if needed. If they bring back their home learning on a Tuesday each week they will receive a Marvellous Me. There are also this weeks spellings. RWI spelling will start on Monday so this is for the week ahead. We look forward to seeing your creations!

Year 3: The end of week 1!

Wow what an amazing week we have had in Year 3! The children have settled in well and are starting to get used to the routines of the class.

This week in Power Maths we have been using base ten equipment and our hundreds, tens and ones grids to make 3 digit numbers as shown below.

In our reading/spelling groups we have started to look at our new whole class text
We used the glossary at the back of the book to find our information.

In Forest School this week we used natural materials in our environment to make our own paint. Just as the Stone Age people did, we them made paintings of animals.

On Thursday we had our first Now Press Play session based on the Stone Age. It followed a story of a boy that was trying to find a wooly mammoth but was chased by wolves! It was fantastic to see all of the children getting involved in this drama session. We used the script today to highlight nouns, adjectives and verbs.

In Science this week we are recapping the materials unit from Year 2. We used modelling clay to test out the words bend, stretch, twist, poke and flatten. The children wondered if slime was elastic? (so will it shrink back to its original shape and size) We are unsure so we are going to test that out next week!

In our computing lesson this week we have used PurpleMash 2free code to make an algorithm. Our sprites (characters) would move if we programmed them to. Some children even got them to have a conversation!

We ended our very busy week with our praise assembly. A huge well done to:
-Anna for amazing questioning during our Science
-Tristan for his effort in reading and getting his first quaffle
-Henry C for his dedication to reading and completing quizzes at home

All of the Year 3 team wish you a lovely restful weekend. I will put another blog on in a moment with this weeks spellings and home learning.

If you have any questions or concerns please do feel free to email me at any point or catch any of the Year 3 team on the door in the mornings or after school

Year 3: The week ahead...

This week we have a variety of activities planned to settle the children back into school and adapt to Year 3.

Monday
The children will be working with Mrs Bishop and the rest of the Year 3 team to build and write a class charter. They will also be put in their houses! We will have a discussion about how we are all one team and it does not matter the name of their house.

In the afternoon they will be walking up to the Sunflower trail. Please feel free to pack a spare pair of shoes or trainers so that their lovely shiny new shoes aren't ruined. It is going to be warm so please bring a labelled hat and have sun cream applied.

Tuesday onwards
We will be getting into our routines of Literacy, Power Maths, RWI spellings and Science and Forest School on Wednesday pm. As it is hot this week the children can wear short sleeve tops but please can we have sun cream applied.

We can't wait to start our Stone Age topic this week and have lots of exciting learning planned!

See you all tomorrow

The Year 3 team 😀
