Year 3: Fitness February link

Here is the link to log all of your daily fitness onto. At the end of each week this will be added up and a friendly competition between the classes will begin!

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScEnvaC_m4eWMTq6iujdf-f9SN-GbBq4wo7k_BwA4UKATHXEA/viewform?usp=sf_link

The link asks you for the distance travelled. So if you are walking to school, cycling, scootering then make sure you log it 😊Other activities such as fitness clubs after school such as football, rugby, swimming, tennis can all be logged on here. Lots of people have watches to count steps but if not you can easily work out distance by typing it into google maps πŸ‘

See you all tomorrow for the start of Fitness Feb! (it's a sporty dress up)

Year 3: Home learning

The children have x3 pieces of card in their home learning folder

Year 3: Review of the week

This week in Power Maths we have started Unit 5 on Multiplication and Division.

We have been using multiplication facts to answer a series of questions.

In Literacy the children wrote their bigwrite as one of the dogs of the Endurance.

After I had marked their work, the children then used purple pens to make some improvements. We've decided that we will keep the big write as a focus for next week and look at fronted adverbials again as well as tense.

In Science yesterday the children learnt about skeletons and the names of our bones. They then worked as teams to form a skeleton and label the bones.

Our class library has turned out really well. All of the children have had some time this week in there and have chosen a book. These are allowed home but please can we have them back and in school as the children will be reading everyday. A lot of these books are on the AR system so I am encouraging the children to look on there once they have read them. I have got to say that I am really impressed with the children's enthusiasm with the library and how much they are really getting absorbed in their reading. Thank you so much to POWSA who funded the whole area πŸ’œ

Just a couple of reminders about next week:
*Tuesday: the children can wear their sporty clothes as it is the start of Fitness February.

*Friday: Maths day (dress up in something that relates to Maths. It could be a person, a Maths object or even decorate a t-shirt with Maths symbols.

2Email

Today in Computing, Mr Spracklen introduced '2Email' to Year Three.

2Email is a completely internal email system and your child cannot get email from outside of Purple Mash. It has been developed to provide a safe environment for children to learn about email. It has various settings that Mr Spracklen controls for safeguarding purposes.

Please see the below guide for more information -

We will be learning more about email in the weeks leading up to February half-term.

Year 3: Personal property vote

In class we have had a discussion about personal property, such as toys and special items, we discussed that not everyone might have the same access to such luxury items and that this can lead to jealousy. Not only that but toys can become damaged or lost if in school.

The children voted and a majority vote in favour of NOT bringing in toys and precious items from home. This includes fidget toys, unless we have given your children an item for them to use. Please do not allow your children to bring in their own.

We also reinforced the importance of them taking care of their belongings. Making sure that they bring in their snack and drink pots. Checking that they have their jumpers and cardigans and that items are either put in their trays or lockers.

Thank you, in advance, for supporting us in reinforcing these discussions at home. Please communicate with us if you have any other areas for discussion.

Year 3: Home learning 21/1

The children will now get a 'house point' each for spellings that they practice, home learning that is in the box by the following Friday and getting full marks in their spelling checks.

Year 3

We really missed everyone today. Sorry to hear so many of you have the sickness bug. Rest assure the classroom is still being thoroughly cleaned throughout the day. We hope to see the children back when they are well enough. Please remember that they should stay at home for 48hours after the last episode of sickness or diarrhea.

Next week will be showcasing our new class library. We have some amazing books to share!

We hope you are able to have a restful weekend.

Year 3: Watercolour art

Today we looked at the Canadian artist David McEown who travels to some of the most amazing scenery in the world and paints. Today we used his watercolour pictures from Antarctica and the Arctic as inspiration for our own iceberg water colour pictures.

The children used the techniques that they learnt last week to help them build up the colour in their pictures.

Year 3: This week

This week in Power Maths we have been working through how to work out remainders using our times table facts

In RWI spellings this week we have continued to recap on sounds. Next week we will go back to the RWI booklets.

In Science we will be designing our own smoothies.

In Literacy we have been debating about whether or not we would have wanted to leave patience camp to find help. A lot of the children agreed that they would not want to because of the rough sea!

Year 3: Learning this week

This week in Year 3 the children have been working so incredibly hard in their Literacy lessons. We have been using the book below as a stimulus

This a beautifully illustrated book showing the different aspects of the Endurance expedition. Today the children had to write verbs to describe what the crew members did on board eg. train the dogs and then they had to change it to the present perfect tense eg. I trained the dogs.

In Science today we have been looking at how much sugar is in drinks. The children had to order the drinks first and think about which they thought had most in. I then shared the below with them. They were most surprised about the Orange juice and Cola

Year 3: Shackleton, times tables and nutrition!

At the end of last week we started to learn about Sir Ernest Shackleton and his expedition to Antarctica. Over the next few weeks we will delve deeper into this mission and put ourselves in the crews shoe's.

In Power Maths we are moving on from the x4 times tables and now will be looking at x8! This might seem daunting for the children but we use multiplication grids to support this work. Accessing TTRS on a regular basis will help with the recall of times tables.

In Science we are now looking at health and nutrition and particularly what is in our food. We had a really interesting lesson where we compared the food labels from a number of foods. We then went on a nutrition calculator to compare what meals we thought might be healthy than others and why others had so much saturated fat etc. It was really interesting to discuss our ideas of healthy.

We are looking forward to swimming again tomorrow. The children did so well last week and really enjoyed their lesson. Same again this week please, separate swim stuff with goggles and a hat if possible.

See you all tomorrow!

Lesson 2: Home, Top and Bottom Row Keys (Consolidation)

Today in Computing with Mr Spracklen we consolidated our touch-typing work on home, top and bottom row keys.

We talked about the importance of 'posture' and looked at Mrs Troughton's workstation as an example of good practice.

When touch-typing, we had to remember to use the correct finger when typing.

Lesson 1: Home, Top and Bottom Row Keys

Today in Computer Science with Mr Spracklen we started our new unit of work on 'Touch Typing'.

Our aim was -

- To introduce typing terminology.

- To understand the correct way to sit at the keyboard.

-  To learn how to use the home, top and bottom row keys

We learnt about the importance of using the correct fingers when typing -

We then had a go at the following challenges -

To finish the lesson, Mr Spracklen introduced us to the '2Type Pop' game.

This is Mr Spracklen's top score -->

We wonder if anyone can beat Mr Spracklen score of 201 or his accuracy score of 94%?

Do let Mr Spracklen know if you can come close!

Year 3: Let 2022 begin!

Happy New Year!

We can't wait to see everyone tomorrow.

This week we will be looking at our New Year's Resolutions as well as the new Building Learning Powers character for this half term.

We will be going swimming this Wednesday. The children will need a one piece swimsuit, towel and goggles if possible. Please put this in a separate bag. On Wednesday mornings please could you let the adult at the door know if your child is being picked up at the swimming pool. This will be at 3.15pm, the rest of us will walk back to school and be ready for normal pick up at 3.30pm.

Any questions please feel free to email me: b.thorpe@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk

See you all in the morning!
