Year 3 Home learning for half term

Home learning for over the half term

Next term in Science we will begin to look at the topic of plants. With this in mind, if possible we would like you to try and make your own terrarium. Some examples can be seen below.

In the past we have used large jam jars or any large jar. It is important that the terrariums have a lid.  We'd love to see the children making their terrarium. When we come back to school we'd love to have these in school to watch and observe what happens!

Spellings
Purple group: autographic, automobile, autobiography, autopilot, automatic
Blue group: unsafe, unkind, invisible, incorrect, imperfect, immature

Year 3 Thomas the Gorilla

It's not every day you have a Gorilla in your classroom?!

What an amazing experience we had this morning with the team from Teach Rex. They told us the story of Thomas the Gorilla. I wonder if your child could tell you the story?
Once we were introduced to Thomas the children either worked in groups or individually to design and draw a special reserve for primates. They then wrote to Thomas and other primates to show them why they should go to their reserve.

This afternoon they then got involved in a green screen experience.

An AMAZING day!

It was a shame to end the day in the way that we have with the news of the school being shut tomorrow. I didn't have a chance to print out home learning so I will put it on another blog.

We hope you have a lovely half term. Stay safe in the windy weather!

Year 3: The week so far and spellings

What an inspiring start to the week we had! The children were so passionate about the roundhouse not being knocked down by Burger Queen, that they wrote some amazing pieces of writing. All of these will be placed in the writing hall of fame!

In Power Maths this week we are working through 2 step word problems using multiplication and division. For example:

As you can see, the work is quite complex so we spend a lot of time going through the questions together.

Apologies for not sharing the home learning and spellings this week online. We do give sheets out each week that go in the children's home learning folder. Here are the spellings sheet.

Safer Internet Day 2022

Today in Computing with Mr Spracklen we marked Safer Internet Day 2022.

This year, the theme for Safer Internet Day is ‘All fun and games?'. Together we explored what respect means to us, especially in the context of our online relationships.

We all had a go at 'Mr Spracklen's #InspiredToLearn E-Safety Quiz' on Purple mash -

We then tried to create our own e-safety quizzes using 2Quiz on Purple Mash.

For more information on Safer Internet Day 2022, we recommend you check out this great resource from the UK Safer Internet Centre -

Families can find out more about e-safety at -

French with Monsieur Edmonds- Spring 1

Great work in French this week!

I've been so impressed by how quickly Year 3 have been to pick up some basic French as well as some grammar principles which are well above the Year 3 curriculum!

What have we been working on this term?

Colours and numbers:

The verb 'Etre':

The verb 'avoir':

We've also looked at some other adjectives which we can use to describe people including:

We've also been practicing writing some basic sentences using these words e.g 'Je suis fatigué' or 'Elle est grande.' We even spent one lesson looking at agreeing adjectives with the subject e.g Elle est folle/Il est fou. They really have blown my socks off with their ability to absorb some complex ideas!

Some really brilliant work- well done Year 3.

Year 3: Home learning 4/2/22

Year 3: The end of the week

Thank you to everyone that supported the NSPCC TTRS number day. The children have spent some time today on this, collecting points for the school! It was great to see so many great costumes.

In Art yesterday the children were exploring watercolour some more and used tape to mask off shapes on the page. They then painted their pages. This gave an amazing piece of art work and the children were really proud.

We hope you have a great weekend.

Year 3: Some tricky Maths

In Power Maths today we had to be Reggie the resilient tortoise and overcome a tricky lesson. We have been focussing on multiplying a 2 digit number by a 1 digit number. Below is an example of the 'think together' in our lesson and shows how we had been working it out.

The children worked well together to work through the steps of the lesson. Tomorrow we will practice this some more.

Swimming was fantastic this afternoon. Although I don't get to see all the children swimming (I am in the small pool), I did have a quick look over. The 1610 instructors do keep me up to date with everything that is going on. It's good to see the children's confidence growing in the water and hearing that talk so positively about swimming on the walk up and back.

Just a quick reminder about Maths dress up day on Friday and that you should have received an email about parents evenings next week. These are on Tuesday and Thursday evening vie the school cloud. If you have any problems accessing these days then feel free to email me at b.thorpe@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk

2Email (SPAM)

Today in our Computing lesson with Mr Spracklen, this email dropped into our inboxes -

It was a great opportunity for Year Three to remember their S.M.A.R.T e-safety code -

The email was in fact generated by Mr Spracklen.

It was a great hook to teach Year Three about the dangers of SPAM emails.
