Year 3: The life education van and the RNLI assembly

The children have come back to school really well and settled back to our school routine.

This week in Power Maths we have finished off our statistics topic and completed the end of unit check. We have used our purple pens to work through the questions the children got wrong.

In Literacy this week we have been looking at when to use 'a' and when to use 'an' before a word. We are also recapping when to use possessive apostrophes.

Yesterday the children went into the life education van (in the hall) and learnt about their bodies and how to stay healthy.

They then had an assembly with the RNLI about water safety and what to do if you're in trouble in the water and the importance of only swimming between the flags.

In Science we started to think about light and sources of light. We discussed a which light is man made and the children drew pictures of them.

Just a quick reminder about Forest School tomorrow- long trousers and sleeves are advisable please.

Parent information session will be next Wednesday 4th at 9am in the hall.

See you all tomorrow!

Computing with Mr Spracklen

Today in Computing with Mr Spracklen we found out what a 'simulation' is and sought to understand the purpose of simulations.

Year Three now know that a computer simulation can represent real and imaginary situations.

Year Three should be able to give you some examples of simulations that are used for fun and for work.

Year Three should be able to make suggestions of the advantages and problems of simulations.

We will be learning more about simulations next week.

Y3: Let the Summer term commence!

We hope you have all had a lovely Easter break. We can't wait to start the Summer term tomorrow!

I (Mrs Thorpe) will be in tomorrow but starting next week Mrs Johnson will be teaching in Year 3 which I know everyone is very excited about!

We have stopped swimming now, however there may be some children who will be invited still to swim in a couple of weeks time. I will speak to you about this over the next week or so. As swimming has stopped we are now bringing back Forest School, this will now be on a THURSDAY. Long sleeve tops and trousers are advised please. Not only will this protect the children from the heat but when we use tools they will need to have this on. If you don't mind your child getting a bit dirty then they don't have to necessarily change but I would appreciate if you could let me know please. Sometimes, especially if it has been raining the children can get very mucky and so wellies or sensible boots are advisable.

We will be doing basketball with coach Luca on a Friday pm. So PE kits for Friday please (the children can wear plimsolls or trainers for this) .

As the weather is quite warm can we remind you to pack a labelled drinks bottle, labelled hat and labelled sun cream. Ideally they would have had suncream applied before the start of the day but we can store them in school with a signed slip.

See you all tomorrow!
Any questions about anything please feel free to email me at b.thorpe@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk or catch me at the door in the morning.

Year 3: Chick, drama, sketching and hot cross buns!!

Thank you all so much for supporting your children with their home learning this half term. We have had some amazing work handed in, including the brilliant persuasive letters! With so much effort put in how can I say no to some fun time and easter egg hunt tomorrow afternoon!

We had a visit this morning from one of the chicks that have hatched!

This week we have written letters to our link school in America, each child is going to have a penpal over there which is very exciting!

Today we have used the Now Press Play headsets in Science to find out what plants need to survive!

In Art we learnt about the French artist Henri Rousseau and looked at his famous painting, Tiger in a Tropical Storm (surprised). We related it to the artwork of the tribes we learnt about and discussed how Rousseau actually hadn't been to the jungle so a lot of the plants in this picture do not grow there.

We then followed an online step by step tutorial to draw tigers. This was fantastic and the children loved the challenge (well most of the time!)

This is the link to the video we used:

Art for kids hub have lots of videos with step by step guidance of how to draw different animals.

Finally, at the end of the day we spoke about the Easter story and why people eat hot cross buns, then ate some!

Year 3: Home learning and spellings

Home learning this week links to the persuasive writing the children have been learning about this week. Thinking about the word choices they use if trying to persuade and their thoughts on a debate. We hope to have an end of term Easter egg hunt but it does depend if they can convince me in their letters! 😁

Year 3: The end of the week-Art, Science and persuasive writing

In Art this week the children sketched and shaded using sketching pencils. They used pictures of the fauna from the Rainforest as inspiration.

In Literacy this week the children have planned and written their bigwrite which is a persuasive letter to the MP of Brazil asking him to really think about what he is doing to the Amazon. These were fantastic letters and ones we have worked to improve today by expanding them and adding in more of our thoughts.

In Science we looked at how plants absorb water. We did an experiment over time and had to predict what would happen and which colour would be the strongest.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend
