Home Learning- Planets in our Solar System

For "home learning" this week we have set the children the challenge of learning the names of the nine planets in our Solar System.
A helpful sentence to remind the children of the names of the planets , as well as their order from the Sun, is as follows:
"My very east method just speeds up naming planets!"
Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
Pluto

We have also suggested that the children "track the moon":
Early in the evening, sit by the window and look out at the Moon. Put a piece of Bluetack (or something sticky) on the window in line with the Moon.
Go back to the same place in front of the window later in the night and see how much the position of the Moon has changed.

Have a good weekend,
Duncan MacBean

Home Learning

For their "home learning" this week, I have sent the children home with a couple of Maths Puzzles.

We are very pleased with the work that the children have been doing at home. The last couple of weeks have provided us with some brilliant "Wonderful World" poems and equally fantastic "Titanic Acrostics". Well done everyone!

Many thanks,

Titanic

I have asked the children to complete an acrostic using the word "Titanic". They should write their seven sentences on the card provided. All of the sentences should be about the Titanic.
I have sent home a couple of (pretend) interviews to give them some information about the Titanic.

Bling a bike day!

“Bling a Bike Day”
Yes that is “Bling”, although we would like you to “Bring” your bikes too!
On Tuesday 15th October we will be holding an event to promote “Being Safe by Being Seen” when out on your bikes and scooters. We will have a competition to see who can make their bike or scooter extra colourful and bright,- so that it really stands out!
The children may score extra marks for having bright, colourful clothing that they can put on when parading their “blinged”-bike.
Children who would like to take part in the competition should bring their bikes or scooters to school on the morning of Tuesday 15th October. We will be asking Jonathon Dixon, our local Sustrans Bike Officer, to judge the competition. Winners will be decided during our school assembly at 10.10 am.
It is important that any materials added to your bike or scooter should not be in the way of moving parts, and that your bike or scooter can still be wheeled along in the parade without any difficulty.

Our Harvest celebration

Thank you for all the harvest produce brought in, also the wonderful cakes and breads which were for sale in the Harvest café during the afternoon. The children created some wonderful food in class too! We hope some of you got to savour their delights? If not, ask your child what they cooked and what they enjoyed trying?

The School council decided that they would like all proceeds to be sent to help children in other countries whose parents cannot afford to send them to school. We will endeavour to find the right avenue to send this money and will keep you posted.

Maths at Home

A number of parents have expressed an interest in supporting their child's Maths at home.
Can I remind you of the D.A.S.P. (Dorchester Area Schools' Partnership) website- http://www.dasp.org.uk/  This has a number of useful links and offers advice on the sorts of mathematical activities that children in Year 3 would benefit from doing at home. You can access this website directly from our school website. Follow the link to "DASP Maths". There are videos and booklets for parents.

"Multiplication Push"- We will be having a push on learning our "Times Tables".
The new revised curriculum for Mathematics suggests that by the end of Year 3 children should be confident at handling the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 Times Tables.

We have asked the children to write an "acrostic" using the word "LIFEBOAT". They are being encouraged to write 8 sentences beginning with those letters, relating to facts about what they have found out about lifeboats.
DM

Out and About

The children in Year 3 have been out and about this week on two mvery successful visits.
On Tuesday we had fun in Weymouth visiting the Lifeboat and Nothe Fort. We are very grateful to Alan and Phil at the Weymouth Lifeboat station for spending time with us and showing us around.
Today we were lucky enough to coincide our visit to Maiden Castle Farm with sheep shearing taking place! Our thanks to Hazel again for inviting us along!

Spellings

Every Monday, we will be sending the children home with “Spelling Lists”. This will be a sheet of paper with 4 lists on it. The children will have a “test/quiz” on the words from the lists on the following Monday.
The children should choose 2 lists that they feel they need to learn and should only be learning 2 lists from the selection of four. In other words, if they are learning the words on lists 3 and 4 then that is because they are confident that they can already manage the words on lists 1 and 2.
Children in the past have enjoyed this approach.
I will be asking the children to write their chosen words into their Home Learning Diaries.

Thank you for your support,
Duncan MacBean

Login details and passwords

The children's "login details" and passwords for "Mathletics" and "Purple Mash" have been stuck inside the backpages of their school diaries.
We hope that children will continue to make the most of these home learning opportunities. Can we remind you of the importance of adult supervision when children are using the internet.

Class Charter Year Three

We have spent some time in class discussing how we can work effectively together and make the very most of a happy time at school.
We came up these these ideas for a Class Charter:

Class Charter

Follow the seven caterpillars.
Be kind and caring to other people.
Remember to be polite.
Be sensible. (Don’t let other people persuade you to do the wrong thing.)
Share things nicely with other people.
Be friendly and make people feel welcome and included.
Move around the classroom sensibly.
Work together and be cooperative.
Always listen to each other carefully.
Look after the equipment and show respect for the school property.

Blogging back in Business

Dear Parents,
I'm sorry that I have not been sending out any blogs in the last week. This was due to technical difficulties, but we are now back in business!
The children in Year 3 have made a terrific start to the new term and are showing lots of interest and enthusiasm for the curriculum.
Do feel free to approach any of the Year Three Teaching Team if you have any concerns or need any information.
The Year Three Parents' Information Session is on Friday 20th September (9.00-9.30am) in the school hall. This will be an opportnity to find out more about the curriculum this term and some of the routines and procedures we will be involved in.

Home Learning Activity (week of Monday 1st July)

For their home learning activity this week I have asked the children to have a think about what they might like to do (-say, act out, sing, dance, perform, etc) in our Class Assembly. I have suggested that they write down their ideas so that we can plan the assembly together next week.
I have also suggested that we might include some thoughts about how we could make the World a better place. So I have asked them to complete one of the following statements:
"We could make the World a better place if we...."
" If I ruled the World I would....."

Just another reminder that the date for our Class Assembly is now Friday 12th July (9.20am)

POWSA Social

Hi there guys,
Just to let you know that the next POWSA meeting is being held on the 9th July at 19:45 at the new Wagamama restaurant in Brewery square. New faces are always welcome.  We are a small group of committed parents and teachers who enjoy raising money for our school and children, and without all your help and support this just wouldn't happen.  However, our core group is getting smaller and smaller and as a consequence recent events have been much harder to organise and run.  Therefore we would ask you to seriously consider coming along to the next meeting, ask your questions, find out what its all about and see if becoming a POWSA member is something you would like to do.  There is no expectation on your time, we wont sign you up to do anything, we just ask you come along, meet us and enjoy a nice meal.  If you do fancy coming would you be kind enough to let a POWSA member know, or leave your name with the school office, just so we can ensure a big enough table.
Hope to see you there!

Change of date for Year 3 Class Assembly

Dear Parents,
I am very sorry if this causes any inconvenience to you, but unfortunately I need to change the date of the Year 3 Class Assembly. This will now take place a week later that previously scheduled and will therefore be on Friday 12th July (at the same time of 9.20 a.m.)
This is because I need to attend a family funeral.

Home Learning (week of 24th June) -Design a Mascot

Home Learning Activity Year 3 Week of 24th June

It has been brought to my attention that the Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is running competition for school children in Dorchester.
The competition is to design a mascot that children can identify with for the hospital to use on their “Children’s Services Webpage”.
I thought that this might be a nice “home learning” activity for the children in Year 3 this week:
The children can paint, draw, or photograph, or use an Art programme on the computer to create their mascots.
Bring the work in to school as usual and I will send the children’s work as entries to the competition.
Thank you

Musical Soiree

This is a short reminder of our Musical Soiree taking place on Tuesday

25th June at 6.00pm at the Dorchester Middle School.

We moved the venue as we have exceeded our school’s capacity! Please also

recall that the performance is not suitable for small children to attend.

Finally, I am assuming that all children are taking part unless you have

informed the office or me?!  If your child would like to be involved and has lessons outside of school then please also see me!
As this is the sole concert of the year

expectations are that all children learning music at the school would

endeavour to be there. Thank you! Mrs Mewett

Mr F's thoughts on Home Learning in Year 3!

Mr F was so impressed when he looked at Year 3 's Home Learning about the Vikings! Keep it up for the rest of this term!

Home Learning - week of Mon 17th June- "Food to the Table"

"Food to the Table"
The children are finding out about things that people have for breakfast. They are considering where things are grown and what happens to them before they arrive on the breakfast table, for example shipping, processing, slaughtering, refining, packaging, drying, bottling, transporting – depending on the food/drink.

The children need to think of some more examples and continue the table that they have started at school.

Thank you for your help,

End of Year Assessments

The children may mention to you that we have doing some "tests" this week.
These annual assessments help us to monitor progress. We are administering these tests in a very gentle and friendly way and hopefully the children will not feel worried by the process. However, because of the need to guage their independent ability, it might feel awkward to some of them that we are not "helping" and "supporting" them in the ways that we normally do.
Please do let us know if you become aware of your child feeling anxious about the assessment process.
Thank you

Home Learning Year 3

Well done to all those children who completed the suggested "Home Learning" this week. We had a fantastic response, many of the children opting to present their work using "Powerpoint". We have really enjoyed looking at all of the excellent work.

For the week over half term, I have asked the children to find out about creatures that live in and around rivers (with particular reference to rivers in this country- so no crocodiles etc).
This research will lead on to work that we will be doing about Rivers and about the ecology of Rivers.

We hope that you have a great half term holiday.

POW Netball Tournament

POW Netball Tournament
18/05/13
On Saturday, the school was full of buzz and excitement with lots of different stalls and activities set up. There were also several children dressed in their PE kit ready for the netball and football tournaments that were about to take place. We welcomed netball teams from Piddle Valley, Milborne, Puddletown and Winterborne schools and all began warming up ready for the first match.
There was some fantastic netball being played by all teams and the tournament was well underway.
Group A winners were Prince of Wales after a fantastic attacking team effort in their last match putting them through to the final on goal difference.
Group B winners were Piddle Valley 1 with a brilliant use of the bounce pass into the D to create several goal scoring opportunities.
THE FINAL
POW vs PV1
In the tense final, with many team mates and parents cheering on the side lines, both teams played brilliantly. Piddle Valley's speed of passing and movement began to tip the scoreline in their favour before half time. In the final half Prince of Wales did well to get some goals back. But the clock had run out... Piddle Valley won 8-3. Mr Farrington presented the winners with the POW trophy and congratulated all the children for taking part in some excellent netball.
Thank you to all who watched and cheered the teams along and to all the competing schools. A big thank you to Miss Roberts for organising the fantastic event with the most teams ever competing at the POW summer netball tournament.

School Music Soiree

On Friday 10th May a letter will be sent out to all children who learn instruments or who partake in music sessions within The Prince of Wales School to come and perform at the Summer Soiree 2013! We endeavour to involve all children whether beginner or an advanced player. The choir will also perform as well as recorder groups. Please fill out the slip accordingly and return to the school office asap.
If your child has music lessons outside of school but would also like to perform then please drop by and speak to me, we'll endeavour to involve all who wish to perform!
Orchestra  - the children are doing really well with rehearsing the two songs. With six sessions left before the school concert it is important that all children make rehearsals as the premise is to get all playing well with each other!
Choir - again, six sessions to go before our big performance! The sunny lunchtimes are tempting children not to attend. Please talk to your child about 'sticking to attending'. We are trying to give the children some time after choir to go outside too. We do keep a register, so please see me if any queries?
Finally the summer term is the culmination of music practice. So if your child is showing an interest in beginning an instrument then please inform either the school office or myself and we'll place their names on lists for September. We are going to have some spaces when Yr 4 leave in brass, violin, piano and singing.

Request from Year 2!

Hi from Year 2!

As we are really getting excited about reading we have been talking about creating an exciting, inspiring and cosy reading area in our classroom. One of the things we would like in it, is our own class library! We wondered if you had any books that you no longer read, maybe have grown out of, and that would be appropriate for Year 2 readers that you would be allowed to donate to us? We love all sorts of books from picture books to short novels, we also love non fiction books and comics too!

If you can help then we would really appreciate any book donations, so please drop any in to us in Year 2............

Thank you very much!

The children's "home learning" this week is to write down some ideas that we can include in our assembly.
We hope that you can come along. Please wear your Red Noses!
Mr. MacBean

Ancient Greek Myths

The children are writing their own adventure stories
in the style of ancient Greek myths.
We have shared ideas and spent some time planning and talking together about what our stories are going to be about.

Now it's time for the writing!
The children are very enthusiastic about this!

Perhaps they could tell you their ideas:
Who are the heroes? Who are the monsters?
What is the reason for the quest?
Mr. M

Sweatshirt in our "Jumper Dumper"

Dear Parents,
We seem to have accumulated lots of un-named sweatshirts in our "Jumper Dumper". If you are getting short of school sweatshirts at home then please come in to take a look. The "Jumper Dumper" is next to the sink in the classroom.
Thank you,
Duncan MacBean

Second week of orchestra

Just a reminder that we are now in the second week of orchestra (Thursday 7th March)
Those instrumentalists I need this week are Ukelele players and recorder players. If your child was selected by their music teacher they would have received a letter from me inviting them to attend. Children need to come to the school hall for 3.30pm, bring a snack and drink, and then we’ll rehearse. Finish time is 4.15pm; please come around the back of the hall for pick-ups. The violinists and pianists set an excellent standard for the first week, so the challenge is set!

Thank you, Mrs Mewett.

Home Learning Friday 1st March

For their "home learning" this week I have asked the children to write or plan something to contribute to our Class Assembly. Our assembly is on Friday the 15th March.
This is "Red Nose Day". Consequently we have decided to have a "Red Nose theme" to our assembly.
I have suggested that the children might like to tells some jokes, sing some songs, tell us a bit about the history of "Red Nose Day" and find out about who benefits from the money that is raised.

We do hope that you can come alond to the Class Assembly
9.20 am on Friday 15th March.
