Dear Parents,

Happy Christmas Year Three (Holiday Home Learning)

Dear Parents,

I would like to wish you all a "Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!"

I have not given the children any extra "home learning" activities for the holiday, but have encouraged them to have plenty of fun reading over the next two weeks (and made sure that they have all brought home a "Good Reading" book). They do also have the usual "Spelling Lists" to be challenging themselves with.

As Mr. Farrington mentioned in Assembly, the children are likely to need to write some "Thank you" letters in the next couple of weeks. I would, of course, encourage them to write these in their neatness handwriting.

Thank you for your support of the last term. I am thoroughly enjoying working with Year 3.

Have a lovely holiday,
Duncan MacBean

Mixed up shoes (boys')

Dear Parents,
One of the boys in Year 3 has come home wearing shoes of a different size. Both shoes are the same model (black Clarks, 2 Velcro straps, green inner) but he has one 13F and one 2E. (Quite a size difference.) It seems likely that these have been mixed up with another boy's shoes;- who is likely to be finding one of his shoes a rather tight fit!
We have tried to sort this out at school, but without success. Please can you check your son's shoes to see if their shoes are mixed up too.
Many thanks,
Duncan MacBean

Dear Parents,
Many thanks to those of you who have brought in a costume for the Christmas Show already.
Please put the costumes (in a named plastic bag) in Mrs. Thorne's room -that's the little room next to the classroom.
Any of you who may be struggling to find a costume, please let us know.
Many thanks,

2014 DT Christmas competition has begun!

Design Technology Christmas Competition! This year the DT competition is based around making a tree decoration and all classes are welcome to take part! ·       Your decoration must be able to hang from a tree
·       It must be made from as many recycled materials as possible
·       You must have your name and class on a label clearly displayed.
·       What type of decoration can you create which make it unique from other decorations before?!

The closing date for this competition is Thursday 11th December. Please take the decorations to the hall; we will be hanging them ready for judges and assembly!  Good luck!  Finally, we do accept parent help will be needed for this but it should be clear that the child has been involved too!

Experimenting with Forces

Science Sessions
In our Science sessions we have enjoyed experimenting with "Forces".
We carried out two investigations - One to make a "Tin Foil Boat" that would hold as many marbles as possible. - And another: to make supports out of paper that would enable a board to become a table (able to carry additional weights).
The children were all very engaged by the activities.
I'm sure that they would enjoy telling you how they got on, what they learned, and what shapes provided the best buoyancy /or structural support.

Christmas Show Costumes -Year 3

Christmas Show Costumes - "Ebenezer"
Our Christmas Show is going to be a production of "Ebenezer".
This is a simple version of Charles Dicken's "A Christmas Carol.
We would like most of the children in Year 3 to be dressed in Victorian style costumes (caps, waistcoats, bonnets, pinafore-style dresses, cardigans etc).

The only exceptions to this Victorian attire are:
Natalya, Martha and Freya who are "angels"
Freddie, Olivia and  Elian who are "devils"
and Sam a Victorian headmaster.

Don't worry if you have any difficulties finding something suitable,-  please let us know.

Please bring costumes to school in a named plastic bag between Monday 8th and (by) Wednesday 10th December.

Thank you,
DM

Home Learning Friday 28th November

This week I am encouraging the children to read through the words to the songs we will be singing in our Christmas Show in a couple of weeks time. They have each been given a set of song words.

I am also encouraging the children to take part in the Christmas Decoration from "Recycled/Waste" Material Competition.
Entries for this need to be in by Thurs 11th December.

Handwriting Focus

We are having an increased focus on our neat handwriting and the presentation of written work.

We have been encouraging children to make sure that they have an appropriate pencil grip and that they are sitting with a good posture, effectively steadying their paper/book with their non-writing hand.

Please can you reinforce this message with written work that the children carry out at home.

I am hoping to give out certificates to children who have made notable effort and progress over the next couple of weeks.
Thank you,

Year 3 class assembly

I think Mr MacBean's assembly symbolised the way we try to make learning come alive at The Prince of Wales School. The children learnt lots of important historical facts and information and at the same time had lots of fun! They showed great concentration, confidence, co-operation and enthusiasm in the performance. Well done to one and all! Mr Farrington

Home Learning - Week of Mon 17Nov

COUNTRIES IN EUROPE CHALLENGE

Home learning Year 3 –           week of Mon17th Nov

Next week, we will challenge the children in Year 3 to name as many countries in Europe as they can.

Can you learn the names of  five?----ten? --- or maybe, twenty?--- even more?!!

(They no not need to be able to locate them on a map, - just name them.)

Nelson and Hardy Assembly

Well done to all of the children for their excellent participation in our Class Assembly. We think it was a great success. The children found out a lot about Admiral Nelson and Captain Hardy. They had lots of fun doing the assembly.
Our thanks to all of you who were able to pop in to see it today.

Home Learning Year 3 – Friday 7th November

For this “home learning” the children will need to look at a map of Europe.

I have given the children a "blank" map of Europe with the instruction of adding details by looking at a complete map.

Can they find and colour in 15 of the countries?

Perhaps they could label even more than 15.

PE Kit coming home

Dear Parents,
We've sent the children in Year 3 home with their P.E. kits so that they can have a wash; and to give you the chance to check they are still the right size.
Thank you,
Duncan MacBean

Year Three Class Assembly is on Friday 14th November 9.20am

Dear Parents,

Year Three Class Assembly is on Friday 14th November 9.20am.

We are doing an assembly to help us to learn about the life of Nelson and Hardy, and a bit about the naval history of that period. The children are keen to dress up in simple costumes, so it would be great if they could bring along a white shirt, maybe a waistcoat, some tracksuit trousers (perhaps the odd head-scarf) etc, to become sailors from that period.

Thank you,
Duncan MacBean

Home Learning - Half term Holiday week

Wonderful World

For their “Home Learning” activity this week I have suggested that the children make up a poem under the title “What a Wonderful World”. They should try to include images and ideas that make them feel happy and put a smile on their faces.

In class we have listened to “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong and talked about the words in the song.

 Many Thanks,
Duncan MacBean

Right to play

This afternoon Mr Farrington spent the afternoon with Year 3 and the children learnt about the right of all children in India to play. We played with some Indian toys, watched videos of Indian children playing with marbles, bikes, trumpets, catapults and spinning tops and discussed photographs of other children at play.

Time

Dear Parents,
We are having a bit of a focus on "Telling the Time" in our Maths lessons for the rest of this week. For those children who are already able "time-tellers", there will be activities relating to addition and subtraction of time, using time-tables and working with data involving time.

POWSA AGM

Just a quick reminder that the POWSA AGM is happening this Thursday 23rd October 19.45 in the school staffroom.
This is a great opportunity to meet the current POWSA Committee, find out what we do for the school and enjoy home made goodies! We are a committed, friendly but small band of parents and we are always looking for new members. the level of your involvement in planning, implementing and running POWSA events is entirely up to you. We don't expect you to be at every meeting and at every event from start to finish but with more members and if we all do a little bit then there is plenty of time for us all to enjoy each event with our families as well as helping out.
It is a lot of fun and in return you receive a huge amount of satisfaction and feeling of pride that you have raised funds which are used to help all our children and our fantastic school.
Please consider coming along and finding out a bit more. Hope to see you there, POWSA.

The Great PoW Poetry Competition!!!! Get Writing!!!!!

What a wonderful, exciting and inspiring time of year we are immersed in - beautiful autumnal colours, leaves floating to the ground and flooding the pavements, conkers peppering the streets, crackling fires, Diwali, Halloween, Bonfire Night, moving towards winter and all the excitement of Christmas............so let's fire up our creativity and use it to compose a poem!

I am thrilled to announce The Great PoW Poetry Competition!

The theme is Autumn/Winter.

BE AS CREATIVE AS YOU LIKE! Your poem can be as long or as short as you like, it can rhyme or not, you can use any particular style (Acrostic, Haiku, Tanka, rhyming couplets........) However you choose to construct your poem make sure it conveys the theme, remember the presentation of you poem is important too and why not illustrate it as well!!!!!

For Reception ONLY: if writing your own poem is a bit tricky, why not find a favourite poem about this theme and try to copy it, get an adult to help you write one, use a computer or even record yourself reciting one!

There will be one winner per class so, PUT YOUR NAME AND CLASS ON YOUR ENTRY AND HAND IT IN TO YOUR CLASS TEACHER BY FRIDAY 7th NOVEMBER.

The winners will also be displayed on the New Golden Writing Wall!!!!!

We are a very creative school with a bubbling and overflowing imagination so I would love to see as many of you as possible having a go...........then we can have more competitions like this!!!!!

Get writing!!!!!!!

Good Luck - Mrs. Johnson (Literacy Coordinator)

Home Learning - 10th Oct . Farm to Fork

Home Learning Year 3 -    10th October

The children are finding out about things that people have for breakfast. They are considering where things are grown and what happens to them before they arrive on the breakfast table, for example shipping, processing, slaughtering, refining, packaging, drying, bottling, transporting – depending on the food/or drink.

The children need to choose a breakfast item and create a diagram to show how it gets from "farm to fork".

Thank you for your help

Can anybody help?

On the 20th of October we will be having a Rights Respecting Week to celebrate 25 years of the UNCRC.

The Children's Voice have decided that they would like to see some of the UNICEF articles of the Rights of the Child displayed in our school entrance. Each year group will be designing and making a flag portraying one of the articles.

This is where we need your help! We are looking for some plain white flat sheets usually used for bedding that we could have please. As an Eco School we encourage recycling old unwanted items so was wondering if anyone has any old sheets that we could have for our project please. If so please can you either give them to your child's class teacher or pass them on to Mrs Thorpe in Year 1.

Many thanks

Home Learning - Friday 3rd to Friday 10th October

Dear Parents,
This week we have asked the children to design a "flag" expressing the "Children's Rights - We Have the Right to an Identity".  Mrs. Thorpe has produced a leaflet for all of the children in the school explaining what is required, so that they can all have a go at this activity for their "home learning" this week.

Whole school home learning

This week all children will be bringing home a whole school home learning project. We are really proud to be a Rights Respecting School and will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the UNCRC in the week beginning 20th October (more information to follow soon).

Article 8 of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child:

‘We have a right to an identity’

We are going to be designing a school flag to be displayed at The Thomas Hardye School as part of our DASP Rights Week Project (starting on the 20th October). We would like the children to design something we can add on our flag linked to our theme. One design from each class will be chosen by the Children’s Voice. It could be a picture they draw or suitable quote/words. Why are the children proud to be them? What makes them special? All entries to be given to class teachers by the 10th of October.

Swimming - Thursday 11th September

Swimming  Lesson Arrangements
This Thursday (11th September) we will be having our first Swimming session at the Dorchester Sports Centre (next to Thomas Hardye School, on Coburg Road).

Please bring your children to the Sports Centre by 8.45 a.m. Or, alternatively, bring them to the Year 3 classroom at school by 8.30 a.m. so that they can walk to the Sports Centre with members of staff in the Year 3 Team. Any children who attend “Breakfast Club” will walk up with the staff at 8.30 a.m.
We will be putting the children into “Swimming Groups” according to the information that we have received from you, and according to the ability level that they demonstrate in their first couple of lessons. This is how we will ensure that your child receives a lesson appropriate to their needs in a small group, taught by a qualified instructor. The instructors for these Year 3 sessions will be Mr. MacBean , Mrs. Sue Smith and Mrs. Nicole Smith. All of the other members of the Year 3 Teaching team will be present at the lesson to support in the pool and during the changing room time.

Please ensure that your child has the appropriate “swimming kit”: girls swimming costume (one-piece suit is preferable) or boys swimming trunks (not long-length beach shorts, please), a swimming hat (girls and boys) and a towel. Swimming goggles are optional. These items should be kept in a separate bag, or be in a waterproof bag inside their ruck-sacks.

If you have any concerns, please contact myself, any member of the Year 3 Team, or Mr. Farrington.

You could mention some of the things that you found out. You could include a picture of the Year 3 class in action at the centre.

Buy a signed copy and meet the author tomorrow!

Good evening everyone!

An exciting day tomorrow - as it is part of our reading week, we have arranged for a children's author/illustrator to come in and inspire the children about creating stories! He will be giving an exciting presentation/workshop to each class in the morning and then setting activities for them in the afternoon! The author and illustrator is, Mike Brownlow, author of Ten Little Pirates and creator of the TV series Little Robots.

More information about Ten Little Pirates

Ten little pirates set out to sea in search of adventure. But what will the ten little pirates do when they meet a hurricane . . . and a giant squid . . . and a HUNGRY SHARK? This fun-filled rhyming story, which incorporates counting backwards from ten to one, is great to share with young children who are learning about numbers. The colourful, humorous illustrations feature objects to spot and count on every page. With a bouncy, rhythmic text and lots of great sound words, this piratical adventure is perfect for sharing again and again. Short-listed for the Nottingham Children’s Book Awards and the Sheffield Children’s Book Awards, 2014.

Other books that will be on sale:
Make It! Rocket,
Make It! Robot, both published by Scholastic
Bad Manners! Benjie,
Dog Did It! both published by Piccadilly Press.

Mike will be selling copies of his books at the end of the day which you can buy and get signed as a special gift for your child. They will cost £6.99, and it would be appreciated if you could bring the correct money. The children will have a great day experiencing first hand how to create a book, and it would be a lovely, inspiring momento to take away! Check out his website!
We hope to see you at the end of the day tomorrow!

Music lesson next week!

I have asked the children to bring in a tuned instrument for next week's lesson if they play an instrument or have a xylophone or glock at home? We are going to be creating our own introductions to a piece of music and need plenty of tuned instruments.
If your child does bring something in then please ensure it is named and kept safe until the music lesson which is last in the day (2.30pm).

Many thanks,     Mrs Mewett

Home Learning - Time Challenge (17.3.14.)

I have asked the children to have a go at putting things in order of how long they last/ how long they take.
They will need to cut out the sentences and arrange them in order. There is not necessarily a "right" answer, but the activity should promote some interesting thinking and discussion.
Have a great weekend,

Homework Year 3- “Writing My Story in the Style of a Myth”.
Dear Parents,
The children in Year 3 are very enthusiastic about starting to write their “Myths” next week. We have talked about the key features of this style of story.
Please could you encourage the children to continue planning their “Myth –style” story over the weekend. They may like to take their planning home over the course of next week too, but it is important that they bring any of this planning to school each day, as this project will be running through the week.
Yours sincerely,
Duncan MacBean
