Interesting Ridgeway Visit

Well done to the children in Year 3 for the interest and enthusiasm they showed during our visits to the Ridgeway today.

We had a quick look at the 7 Bronze Age Barrows that surround the Came Down Golf Club. Our thanks to the manager for allowing us to visit; and to the golfers who were very interested to find out what the children were up to.

We then went to the site of the "Viking Massacre" that we have been learning about, and looked at the new display boards.

Lastly we went to the Culliford Tree Barrow. This is an ancient Bronze-age Barrow that was also used as a burial place for the Anglo-Saxons about 1000 years ago. It is likely to have been around here that the Anglo-Saxons of the local area gathered for meetings and for special events (like deciding what to do with 54 captured Viking warriors, for example). It was thought to be a place of magic! The ancient people believed that faeries lived inside and that music could be heard coming from the ground! (We didn't hear any though).

Thank you to Steve Wallis (the county archaeologist) who took me to visit these places and gave me some ideas (an knowledge to share) for the visits today.

Year 3 - Life Education Van

"Meet the Brain"
The children had an interesting experience in The Life Education Van. The chosen topic for Year 3 is "Meet the Brain"; where the children learn about how the actions of the body are all governed by our central nervous system with its special control centre in the Brain.
The children were introduced to how things that are put into the body - healthy/unhealthy foods, alcohol, medicines/drugs, and nicotine can effect the way the body works properly.
We were very impressed with the way the children listened and contributed to the discussions.

Sun Hats

Please can I remind you about the children bringing sun hats to school on days that are likely to be particularly sunny. This is particularly important for those days that we have P.E., which will be outside when possible.
We will have an outdoor P.E. session on Monday (a temporary additional session - led by visiting professional Rugby coaches), Tuesday and Friday (led by Mrs. Hibberd and Mr. Treble).
Thank you,
DM

Super Writing

The children did some excellent written work today. - The Biography of Alfred the Great.
Particularly "Well done!" to Eva, Genevieve, Fenella and  Callum who tried particularly hard.

Fantastic "home learning" - Well done.

The Year 3 Teaching Team were very impressed by the "Home Learning" projects that many of the children brought in today. The work showed how enthusiastic the children are about their learning and how skilled they are becoming at doing effective research.
Well done!

Maths - Time

Hello Year 3,

In the first week back, we will be having another look at "Time" in our Maths Lessons:
I have planned a series of activities designed to (ultimately) develop the ability to measure time to the nearest minute on an analogue clock.
-To know how to "say the time" – such as "20 minutes to 10" , and to know how to write this in digital conversion - such as 9.40.
As we have quite a range in abilities in "Time-telling" within the class, I will break this down as follows:
      -          o’clock and half past

-           quarter to/and past

-          5 minute intervals

-          1 minute intervals

For those able “Time-Tellers” who have achieved this, there will be activities to develop use of “Time” in practical context and worded problems (+-x /) involving time calculations.

Alfred the Great

Hello Year 3,
On Monday we will be finding out about Alfred the Great, a famous Anglo-Saxon who fought the Vikings.
If you get the opportunity, and your parents are happy for you to do so, perhaps you could have a look at this BBC website for children :

Have fun,
Mr. M

Viking Research

Hello Year Three,
I hope you're having a lovely holiday.
How is the research into the Vikings going?

I spent last week in Istanbul (in Turkey).
One day I went to an amazing building called (the) Hagia Sophia.
This is a very old building indeed! It was once a church and then became a mosque, and is now a museum that tourists can visit.

One of the things I saw inside was some Viking writing (or Runes). This had been scratched onto the stone balustrade. It says "Halfdan carved these runes".
(Halfdan was here!)

Istanbul used to be called Constantinople and was a part of the Roman Empire. (A more important city than Rome in its day.) The Viking writing was done during the 9th century AD. This shows how far south the Vikings managed to travel.

Have you managed to find out any fascinating facts about the Vikings?
