St. Laurence's Church and the River Wey - Year 3

The children in Year 3 had an enjoyable and successful visit to St. Laurence's Church, the River Wey and Radipole Nature Reserve this week.
We firstly found out about some of the fascinating local history associated with the church. Then we tracked the River Wey from its source at Upwey Wishing Well to where it meets the sea at Radipole Lake, stopping of on the way to have a look at the mid-section of the river around Watery Lane in Broadwey. At Radipole Lake we did Pond-dipping and Bug-hunting, and then finished the day by feeding the ducks!
Our thanks to the parents (and grandparent) who were able to come along to help make the two visits a success. We hope that you had fun too.

There are lots of photos of the two days in the Year 3 Gallery.

Year 1 to Year 4 - Mathletics Mayhem - 30th June 2017

Mathletics has set us a challenge competition!  Over the next two weeks we will be working towards helping each child achieve enough points to get a certificate.  If there is enough participation we might stand a chance at winning one of the prizes on offer for our school!  The purpose of this challenge is to familiarise the children with the new look Mathletics website.  Please could you help out by using your child's Mathletics log in with them at home?  Or you could try the Mathletics app on your tablet.  There will be an opportunity for each class to access mathletics at one playtime per week as well as through their maths lessons and ICT time.  Let's see how many points we can earn!  If your child is uncertain of their log in please ask a member of your child's class team.

Sticky Time with Marshmallows and Spaghetti

Today the children in Year 3 had a sticky time with Marshmallows and Spaghetti. The challenge was to build a tower as tall as possible using only sticks of spaghetti and marshmallows to attach them together. We had some fun. We got in a bit of a sticky mess.
Thank you very much to the Mums and Grandma that came in to join us for the session. (Your help clearing up at the end was very gratefully appreciated.) We hope you enjoyed the session.

I have posted some photos in the Year3 Gallery on the school's website.

Making Towers and Bridges (Year 3 and Year 1)

Today the children in Year 3 combined with the children in Year 1 to take part in some practical designing and building activities.
Working with Miss. Kinkead, the children had to make bridges out of various different play-construction materials. The strength of their bridges was then tested by applying weights.
With Mr. MacBean, the children had to use newspaper and masking tape to make towers that were as tall as possible.
As well as learning about the importance of combining effectively with members of a team, the children learned about various engineering ideas including measurement, strength, balance and support.

Year 3 Young Enterprise "Fiver Challenge" - Home Learning Activity

Year 3 Young Enterprise "Fiver Challenge"

Some of the children have been sent home with a “Fiver” for their enterprise company today. Please can you support them in the spending of this “Fiver”?
We are now entering the next stage of our “Year 3 Fiver Enterprise Challenge”.
What has been done so far? :

1.     Plans for businesses were put forward to Mrs. Mewett and Mr. MacBean.

2.     These are the businesses that have been selected.

Car Wash

Organic Herbs

Play Tattoos

Popcorn

Cupcakes

Teddy Sale (donated teddies)

Play Putty

Fidget Spinners (hand-made)

Bags of Fudge

3.     Teams of children (“companies”) have been established.

4.     The teams have begun to delegate different jobs to different members. These jobs make up their "home learning" activity for this week.

What happens now? :
We give a member of each team a “Fiver”. (Here we need the parents’ help with assisting the children in the spending of their “Fiver”. If any parents are unable to help here, don’t worry, just let us know and we will sort something out.) The team uses this “start-up capital” to get their enterprise off the ground (to buy ingredients, resources etc).

          5.   The children sell their products to the school community after school during the week of Mon 26th - Fri 30th June.

Zak visits Year 3

The children in Year 3 were very excited to meet nine month old Zak today, kindly brought to the classroom by his Mummy (Miss Walden -, Poppy's Mum).
As part of our Jigsaw P.H.S.E program, we are learning about the changes that take place to our bodies as we grow older.
Miss Walden told us about how Zak is learning to crawl about and beginning to feed himself. We were also reminded about how much love and care we need when we are babies; and about all the extra kit you need to look after a baby and keep him/her safe!
Our thanks to Zak and Miss Walden for coming in and sharing their babyhood and motherhood experiences.

Monday 12th June - Bike Breakfast

“Bike Breakfast” at the Prince of Wales School!

On Monday 12th June, we are holding another “Bike Breakfast” event! This is to encourage pupils, parents and staff to get on their bikes and scooters for the journey to school. From 8.40am until 8.55am, there will be drinks and snacks for everyone who cycles or scoots to school.

I hope we can tempt you onto two wheels to help the school get more children active on the school journey. It is fun and healthy and the roads around school will be much calmer if fewer people drive!

We look forward to seeing you there,

DM

The Wind in the Willows - Year 3

The Wind in the Willows
We are planning to use the story of “The Wind in the Willows” to drive our English lessons over the next couple of weeks. We are having a bit of a focus on using speech marks to punctuate direct speech and on the conventions of a play script layout. Our D.T. and Art lessons will also be picking up the theme, with the children creating finger puppets and making up scripts to act out together.

The parts of the story we will be looking at are as follows:
Rat meets Mole + Boat Trip
Toad’s Caravan and then the Car
Mole in the Wild Wood
Crazy Toad Steals a Car
Toad Escapes from Prison
Toad, Ratty, Mole and Badger win back Toad Hall

"Ducks' Ditty"
– a poem in “The Wind in the Willows” by Kenneth Grahame
Can you decorate the “poem page” with sketches of the dabbling ducks and the characters of Rat and Mole as they take the little boat down the river?
Can you learn to recite this poem? – or a part of it?

“DUCKS’ DITTY.”

All along the backwater,

Through the rushes tall,

Ducks are a-dabbling,

Up tails all!

 Ducks’ tails, drakes’ tails,

Yellow feet a-quiver,

Yellow bills all out of sight

Busy in the river!

 Slushy green undergrowth

Where the roach swim—

Here we keep our larder,

Cool and full and dim.

 Everyone for what he likes!

We like to be

Heads down, tails up,

Dabbling free!

High in the blue above

Swifts whirl and call—

We are down a-dabbling

Up tails all!
