Year 3 - Home Learning Activity - Similes

Home Learning Year Three – Week from Thursday 28th Sept
Complete the simile with something suitable?

 As frightened as
 As brave as
 As green as
 As deep as
 As fast as
 As bent as
 As new as
 As cold as
 As hot as
 As soft as
 As wicked as
 As clever as
 As wet as
 As happy as
 As a still as
 As empty as

Can you make up some of your own similes?

Year 3 have been comparing old photos with what is there today

Year 3 looked carefully at the old photographs to see how things in our local environment have  changed over the last generation (70 years or so).

In this photo, the present day has been superimposed onto the past:

Year 3 Fun - following the route of the old Abbotsbury Railway

Children in Year 3 have had fun this week studying Geology, History and Geography associated  with the local environment. We stopped off at nine different locations to collected rocks, to compare old photographs to the modern picture and to look at interesting things.
There is a similar trip planned next week for another group of Y3 children.
My thanks to the parents and grandparents that came along to help us with this exciting day out.

Home Learning Year 3 (wk3)

Home Learning – Year Three   - 21st  September
Following our “Poetry Focus” this week, we are asking the children in Year 3 to have a go at “learning a short poem off-by-heart”.  They have had a look at various different types of poem this week and can now choose one from any style that they wish (- including one of their own creations).
Many Thanks,
Duncan MacBean

Year 3 at Maiden Castle Farm

The children in year 3 enjoyed an interesting visit to Maiden Castle Farm. We learned about how the harvest is gathered using lots of specialist machinery. We were able to look at the farm machinery close up.
We also got to meet the pigs.
Thank you to Hazel for sharing her time, knowledge and expertise.

South Dorset Ridgeway Project Visit Y3 and Y4

Looking at axes with County Archaeologist, Steve Wallis

Today a group of children from Year 3 and 4 went to Kingston Maurward to take part in a South Dorset Ridgeway Project event. The children took part in a mixture of workshops led by local experts (artists, story-tellers and archaeologists) and had a thoroughly exciting time.
I was really proud with the children for the interest and enthusiasm that they showed throughout the day.
There are lots more photographs in the Year 3 Gallery.

Whole School Eco-Poster Competition

We are holding a poster-making competition. It is open to children in all classes. We would like the children to make a poster that gives a clear environmental message relating to any of the general themes of  recycling materials, reusing things where possible, composting organic waste, not dropping litter, and making sure we take care of the environment.

Mr. MacBean talked to the children about the competition in the School Assembly today. The children learned about the importance of not dropping litter and found out how important it is to try to recycle things whenever possible.

The children were reminded about how we earned our "Green Flag" status as an Eco-School. Our Green Flag is currently flying high outside the school entrance.

The children should bring their posters to school by Wednesday 4th October. Mr. Spracklen and Mr. MacBean will be judging the entries and we will be presenting some prizes to the winners in a School Assembly.

Bonjour La Classe

                                                   French in Year 3

Today the children in Year 3 had their first French Lesson. We began to learn to count in French, had a go at learning how to say "Bonjour" and sang the traditional French tune "Frere Jacques".
Perhaps the children could show you the finger-rhyme that we learned -
"Voici ma main.... Elle a cinq doigts....En voici un....En voici deux....trois.....quatre....cinq!"

We have had a great first day back!

Welcome back to the Autumn Term!           (6.9.17)
We have had a great Wednesday!
We are really pleased with the excellent start the children have made today. They have settled in very nicely and are showing lots of enthusiasm and interest in the work.
Today we did some Story-writing, Reading, Singing, Science (learning about “Rocks”) and Handwriting Practice.
The children have now got a new Reading Record Booklet and a Guided Reading Book. Please can they keep these in their “book bags”? We have also given out Spelling Lists (see information below) and a Home Learning Activity for the next week (making a poster – “Rocks are really Useful”).

Year Three  -  Spelling “Home Learning”
Every Wednesday, we will be sending the children home with “Spelling Lists”. This will be a sheet of paper with 4 lists on it. The children will have a “test/quiz” on the words from the lists on the following Wednesday.
The children should choose 2 lists that they feel they need to learn - and should only be learning 2 lists from the selection of four. In other words, if they are learning the words on lists 3 and 4 then that is because they are confident that they can already manage the words on lists 1 and 2. (Some children will be asked to focus on just one list.)
Children in the past have enjoyed this approach.
Spare copies of the “Spelling Lists” are available in the tray by the classroom door.
