Year 3: Week 7 The final week before Christmas!!!

This week we have lots of festivities!

On Monday Gryffindor and Ravenclaw will have Forest School in the afternoon so please come to school in outdoor trousers etc.

We will be finishing off Unit 3 addition and subtraction this week so that we can start our final unit in book 1 in January.

There will be a biscuit dunking experiment in Science and on Wednesday morning we will be having our final reward on our class chart: 'Campfire cook!' Tomorrow we will vote to see what we will be cooking. With this in mind can I ask that everyone wears their FS trousers/ waterproofs with wellies on Wednesday please. And of course Wednesday is CHRISTMAS LUNCH DAY!!

On Thursday we have some special visitors and Friday will be the last festive day before the holidays. Please remember on Friday the children will all be having packed lunch and we encourage you to make this a festive lunch. Maybe they could have sandwiches shaped like trees? A special Christmas treat inside? The idea is that they unwrapped their lunch so please can you wrap them up (please put their names somewhere just incase they get mixed up!). If you have any questions about this or unable to do it please let us know we are happy to help.

The children will be bringing home their Christmas decorations they made on technology day and this year we are a very unique Christmas card. We can't wait for you to see what they have been making, they are fabulous!

See you all tomorrow

Year 3: A busy week so far...

What a magical week we have had so far with lots more to come!

On Monday we had a fantastic time watching 'The Elves and the Shoemaker' production. This was so funny and the children absolutely loved it!

We have started our story writing in Literacy using the information we already know about Shackleton. I can't wait to read the finished story next week!

Slytherin and Hufflepuff did Forest School today. We are in the process of finishing off a very special Christmas card this year. Gryffindor and Ravenclaw will be doing this on Monday.

Just a reminder that is is our story night tomorrow 5-6pm in the hall (please drop the children off at the back of the hall). They are invited to wear their PJs or onesies and bring a small toy.

And finally on Friday it is Christmas Jumper day in support of Save the Children.

Y3 Week 6: Feeling festive!

Hello everyone. I hope you are enjoying your weekend, it's lovely to see a visit from Jack Frost this morning over the rooftops.

Tomorrow morning we are all very excited to welcome Elves into school! We will be watching the production of Elves and the Shoemaker at 9am so please do try and get in for 8.55 at the latest. The children can dress up as an elf or just wear something festive. That might just be a hat or could be a festive colour such as green or red, please don't feel like you have to buy anything for this. We won't be having Forest School this Monday.

On Wednesday pm Slytherin and Hufflepuff will be having Forest School whilst the other two groups have Science inside with Mrs Hall. Gryffindor and Ravenclaw will have their FS session next week.

For the next two weeks in Literacy we will be planning and writing an adventure story as part of the big write. Each day the children will write parts of the story based on what they have learnt in the lesson. I can't wait to see these! The children have really enjoyed our Shackleton learning and have found out so many facts about what life would have been like on the Endurance.

In Maths we will be carrying on with addition and subtraction and focussing on being able to use the inverse to work out an answer. For example this is one of the questions from a 'think together' session this week

Then using the whole part model above, the largest number will go at the top. I've included a photo to explain how we would work this out in the classroom. I hope this is helpful for you, I know that a few parents had asked for some more information about what we are teaching in Power Maths and how we are working out answers. Any questions about the below please do just give me an email.
Subtraction a is incorrect.

Lastly just a quick reminder about our story evening on Thursday 5-6pm in the hall. The children can wear their pyjamas and bring a small soft toy. We will be have some delicious treats. And then on Friday we will be supporting 'Save the Children' by wearing our Christmas jumpers.

Here's to a festive fun packed week!!

Year 3 - Monday - Operation Elf

I expect you've heard the news, but just in case you haven't.  Monday is elf day! Hooray!

Year 3 - Polar Explorers - 3rd December 2020

STEM learning - Polar Explorers

Over the last half term we have been investigating what it would be like to work within a polar research facility.  We have carried out a range of STEM activities from exploring insulation and how animals and humans keep warm in the arctic; blubber gloves and how to eat like an arctic explorer.

This has involved us in applying our science, technology, engineering and maths in order to solve problems relating to our polar topic.  This week we have begun to make our own explorer cakes and design our own high calorie polar diet. Super learning year 3!

Home Learning and Spelling - 3rd December 2020

Oops!  I missed out this week's red and orange words.  Perhaps you can find some words that are used often, but tricky to spell?  Write them in the red or orange boxes and we'll see who can spell some of them next week.  Maybe some festive words would be good?

Year 3 Home Learning

3rd December 2020

To be completed by 10th December

Polar Story Planner

Next week we will be writing our own Polar explorer adventure stories. We would like you to make a cartoon strip of something that could happen during your story.  Think about what you have learned about polar regions and what kind of problems you might face on your journey.  Draw a picture for each part of your idea to tell the story.  You should include a short sentence under each picture to explain it.  You could also include speech bubbles or thought bubbles to explain what people in your story are saying or thinking.

There is a blank cartoon strip attached to this sheet.

Quick Quiz

Can you identify these Christmas Songs from just their initial letters?  Get the whole family involved, some children’s songs, some traditional carols and some chart songs.
