Parents' Information session - reminder

Just a quick blog to remind the parents of children in Year 3 that I will be holding a "Parents' Information Session" this Friday (15th). I will be talking about the curriculum that we will be covering during the term and some special events that we have planned.

Today we have found out about the story of Daedalus and Icarus. The children really enjoyed this ancient Greek myth. We will be using the story as a basis for some of our written work this week.

Praise where praise is due (Friday 8th Jan)

Well done to Milly, James K, Bruno, Jensen and Mason who were all praised in today’s school “Praise Assembly”:

Milly and James K. – for their fantastic work in English and Mathematics over the course of the week.

Bruno – for his brilliant effort with his handwriting and the presentation of his work.

Jensen and Mason – for their phenomenal progress in Swimming.

Super "Shape" work - Year 3

The children in Year 3 have had a busy time in their Mathematics lessons this week learning all about "Shapes". We had a particular focus on what is meant by "a right-angle" and looking at the symmetrical properties of shapes.  We also tried to learn the names of some 3D shapes.

Ancient Greek Fact Finding Mission       Part 1

What did the ancient Greeks eat?
Find three facts about Athena?
What was an Oracle?
Who was Poseidon?
What is the Parthenon?
Find the names of as many ancient Greek Heroes as you can:
Who was Aesop?
Find out three facts about Alexander the Great:
What was a trireme?
Who lived on Mount Olympus?
What sports did the ancient Greeks play?

The children have also been given a "Mathematics activity" to have a go at.

Great first day back

The children in Year 3 made a great start to the new term today. We started our topic about "Myths and Legends" by looking at the tragic tale of "Orpheus and Euridice" from ancient Greece. The children thoroughly enjoyed the story and produced some great written work.
In our Maths lesson be began our work on "Shapes" by looking at the properties of 3D Shapes.

Happy New Year and details of Jan' week 1

Happy New Year! I do hope that you have enjoyed a fantastic holiday and that Father Christmas was kept appropriately busy at your house!

Welcome back to school. We have another busy week of exciting learning planned.

As a mini-project in English (with links to Humanities), we will be finding out about myths and legends; starting with some from ancient Greece. This project will reach a finale with the children writing their own stories in the style of ancient myth. (- So, that's heroes on quests that defeat monsters on the way with the help of little bit of magic! - I love this project!)

For our learning in Mathematics in the first week, we will be studying "Shape":
The learning objectives of the Year 3 curriculum are listed below:    

Draw 2-D shapes and make 3-D shapes using modelling materials.

Recognise 3-D shapes in different orientations and describe them.

Recognise angles as a property of shape or a description of a turn.

Identify right angles and recognise that two right angles make a half-turn, three make three quarters of a turn and four a complete turn .

Identify whether angles are greater than or less than a right angle.

Identify horizontal and vertical lines and pairs of perpendicular and parallel lines.
