Interesting Ridgeway Visit

Well done to the children in Year 3 for the interest and enthusiasm they showed during our two visits to the Ridgeway today:
We went to the site of the "Viking Massacre" that we have been learning about, and looked at the new display boards and the old Roman Road.

We went to the Culliford Tree Barrow. This is an ancient Bronze-age Barrow that was also used as a burial place for the Anglo-Saxons about 1000 years ago. It is likely to have been around here that the Anglo-Saxons of the local area gathered for meetings and for special events (like deciding what to do with 54 captured Viking warriors, for example). It was thought to be a place of magic! The ancient people believed that faeries lived inside and that music could be heard coming from the ground! (We didn't hear any though).

 

 

 

We had a quick look at the 7 Bronze Age Barrows that surround the Came Down Golf Club. Our thanks to the manager for allowing us to visit.

 

And an extra big “Thank you!” to Steve Wallis (Dorset County Archaeologist) who gave us such interesting lessons in the classroom and who came with us on the visits today.     DM

 

spotted ... Yr 3 singers

A lovely surprise tonight as I watched the Yr 4 class singing at St Osmunds school to see three children from Yr 3 come onto the stage with Skylarks choir run by Kathie Prince.

Well done to Megan, Elsie and Olivia - super singing, concentration and confidence displayed in front of such a big audience! The Prince of Wales school is very proud of all this talent!

Any spare help?!

You may have seen that the plastic bottle greenhouse is starting to take shape, but we do not some people to come in and volunteer to help us complete all sides. Then we will have a last collection of bottles to create the roof. Please come in and speak to Mr Gibson R or Mrs Webb (Yr 2) if you have a spare hour to help? We know the children will love using this resource when completed!

Home Learning Year 3 - Thurs 10th March

For  their "Home Learning" challenge this week, the children have been asked to think about whether  different materials could be discovered by archaeologists because they are likely to survive 1000 years. The children needed to fill in the grid provided, deciding which column is appropriate for the different materials. (This is more clear when you see the "activity sheet".)

An enjoyable Year 3 Class Assembly

Well done to the children in Year 3 for their interesting (and amusing) class assembly today. Lots of fun! Our thanks to the parents and grandparent that were able to pop along this morning to watch.

Owl Competition - Year Three

A huge WELL DONE to the these children in Year 3 who entered our Recycled Owl Competition!
Jensen, Milly, Elsie, Ben, James F, Darcey, Megan and Harris.
ALL of the entries were absolutely brilliant. It was almost impossible to pick an overall winner (because they are all winners), but I did. And the winner in Year 3 was.....(drum roll) .....
