Violin Concert for us to enjoy

Well done to the violinists from Year 3 and 4 who performed for the school today. It was lovely to see what fantastic progress you have all been making.

Wildlife Club and the Stick Insects

Today the children in Mr. MacBean's "Wildlife and Eco Club" cleaned out the stick insects' old branches, gave them some fresh Bramble and fresh water.
The children enjoyed holding the stick insects. We noticed how much they had grown since we first got them.

Bike It Breakfast

We had another successful Bike-It-Breakfast event today at the Prince of Wales School.
In spite of the rather chilly weather, lots of children still came to school on the bikes and scooters to be rewarded with a "Breakfast on arrival"!
A big "Thank you" to those parents who helped us out by providing some healthy breakfast snacks.

Bob the Crab visits Year 3

The children in Year 3 enjoyed today's visit from Jasmine's Dad, Mr. James Passmore, and his Brown Crab, Bob.
Bob weighed in at an impressive 3.5kg and had a carapace (shell) width of 25cm!
Bob was very chilled when he made his visit (literally with ice), so he didn't present any danger to the enthusiastic children who had a lot of fun holding him and examining him.

Year Three Explore the "Lumps and Bumps" of the South Dorset Ridgeway

Well done to the children in Year 3 for the interest and enthusiasm they showed during our visits to the Ridgeway and Maiden Castle today and yesterday.

Firstly, we went to the site of the "Viking Massacre" (or “Pit of Doom”, as it is sometimes called). We have been learning about how a party of Vikings was brutally executed there 1000 years ago.

Then we had a look at the Bronze Age Barrows that surround the Came Down Golf Club. (Our thanks go to the manager for allowing us to visit.)

We also went to the Culliford Tree Barrow. This is an ancient Bronze-age Barrow that was also used as a burial place for the Anglo-Saxons about 1000 years ago. It is likely to have been around here that the Anglo-Saxons of the local area gathered for meetings and for special events (like deciding what to do with 54 captured Viking warriors, for example). It was thought to be a place of magic! The ancient people believed that faeries lived inside and that music could be heard coming from the ground! (We didn't hear any though,…too windy).

Finally, the afternoon was spent having a challenging walk across Maiden Castle, where we looked at the earthworks, the barrows, the 2 dew ponds and the remains of the Roman Temple.

An extra big “Thank you!” goes to Steve Wallis (county archaeologist) who gave us such interesting lessons in the classroom and who came with us on the visits on Tuesday and today.
