Week 2- Year 3 learning for the week ahead

The week ahead in Year 3...

This week we have an exciting visitor...The Bug Man! Nick from Bugfest will be showing the children (socially distant) a number of creatures that you find in the Rainforest. We will then use this information and research other animals on the internet to make a Rainforest animal fact file.

On Monday afternoon we are going to split into two groups. One group will do PE with Mrs Hall (please could all PE kits be stored in your child's locker) and the other half of the class will be going to be outside with me doing Science, then we will swap.  I don't anticipate needing different clothes for this session as it is dry, however if you would prefer your child to wear wellies then please place them on the rack outside the classroom.

On Friday we started the Year 3 Power Maths book. For the next few weeks we will be focussing on place value. In the mornings the children have a times table focus. At the moment we are recapping 2, 5 and 10s but we will move on to making sure they are secure in 3, 4 and 8s.

On Tuesday afternoon Mr Treble will be leading PE. I have had a couple of parents ask about swimming. We will be giving an update on swimming soon but whilst we are not swimming we will be having an extra PE session and outside learning.

Can't wait for the busy week ahead! We will blog some pictures tomorrow of our visitors.

Spellings and Home Learning - 3rd September 2020

Welcome back everyone!  The start of new routines and today is spellings and home learning.

We will be sending the spellings and home learning home every Thursday, to be returned for the following Thursday.  Each week we will also blog the spellings and home learning here - handy if the piece of paper gets lost!  There are more paper copies in the classroom, if you need one just ask at drop off or collection.

Here they are:

Rainforest investigators: Animals

This week we have begun finding out about Rainforests; where they are in the world; the different layers in rainforests; we have asked questions about pictures from the rainforest and imagined going on a trip there.

Next week we will be thinking about what lives in the rainforest!

For home learning we would like you to pick a rainforest animal to find out more about.  Can you become an expert on your animal?  You could find or draw pictures of your animal, label its characteristics and write some interesting facts about it.  Maybe you could make a fact file,  a quiz, a top trumps card or a poster about your animal.

We look forward to hearing more about Rainforest life next week when you bring back your learning.

Quick Quiz:

Can you name these rainforest creatures?

We look forward to seeing your work at home, all efforts will be rewarded!!

Let the magic and wonder begin!

 Welcome to Year 3!

It was fantastic to have all of the class in school today. This morning we got to know each other and we explained about some of the differences at school at the moment.

We had a delivery of the sorting hat which had scrolls and ribbons naming all of the children (we think it was house elves that got them all ready!) Inside the scrolls it told the children which 'house' they are in. We had a discussion about how every house is important and that although they are in 'houses' (so we can group them for specific lessons and activities) collecting of the house points will be a class reward. I will explain more about this in the information session via zoom on Wednesday 9th September 2-3pm via zoom.

After break time we spoke about what we would like Year 3 to be like. We made potions and added qualities such as kindness, respect, fun, helpfulness and hard work. Then we added the magic and watched the potions form!

Myself, Miss Johnson, Mrs Brooker and Mrs Hall will be rotating where we stand and greet you all in the mornings and after school. If you have any questions please do email either me (b.thorpe@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk) or Miss Johnson (a.johnson@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk).

We look forward to a magical year!

On Friday afternoon the children want to celebrate the end of the year back at where Year 3 first began... with Harry Potter! Most of the children said they have seen the film but we will celebrate (socially distant) with some delicious snacks.

Y3- Great 1st Sports week and Dino and fossil art!

This week Resilient and Discovery Kingdom have enjoyed playing Boccia in their areas. And of course today they all completed the ‘chacha slide’ as part of dance day. Well done everyone one, fantastic dancing!!

As well as sports week we have carried on our learning about fossils. Writing about how they are formed, making imprint fossils out of clay and also making 3D pictures of two of the dinosaurs that Mary Anning found the fossils of! If you would like to have a go at these at some please follow this link to Darrell Wakelam.  https://www.darrellwakelam.com/downloads Darrell has worked with the current Year 4 class on the Celtic skeleton on show in the cloak room at school. He has some amazing pieces to follow and make!
