Year 3: This week

This week in Power Maths we have been working through how to work out remainders using our times table facts

In RWI spellings this week we have continued to recap on sounds. Next week we will go back to the RWI booklets.

In Science we will be designing our own smoothies.

In Literacy we have been debating about whether or not we would have wanted to leave patience camp to find help. A lot of the children agreed that they would not want to because of the rough sea!

Year 3: Learning this week

This week in Year 3 the children have been working so incredibly hard in their Literacy lessons. We have been using the book below as a stimulus

This a beautifully illustrated book showing the different aspects of the Endurance expedition. Today the children had to write verbs to describe what the crew members did on board eg. train the dogs and then they had to change it to the present perfect tense eg. I trained the dogs.

In Science today we have been looking at how much sugar is in drinks. The children had to order the drinks first and think about which they thought had most in. I then shared the below with them. They were most surprised about the Orange juice and Cola

Year 3: Shackleton, times tables and nutrition!

At the end of last week we started to learn about Sir Ernest Shackleton and his expedition to Antarctica. Over the next few weeks we will delve deeper into this mission and put ourselves in the crews shoe's.

In Power Maths we are moving on from the x4 times tables and now will be looking at x8! This might seem daunting for the children but we use multiplication grids to support this work. Accessing TTRS on a regular basis will help with the recall of times tables.

In Science we are now looking at health and nutrition and particularly what is in our food. We had a really interesting lesson where we compared the food labels from a number of foods. We then went on a nutrition calculator to compare what meals we thought might be healthy than others and why others had so much saturated fat etc. It was really interesting to discuss our ideas of healthy.

We are looking forward to swimming again tomorrow. The children did so well last week and really enjoyed their lesson. Same again this week please, separate swim stuff with goggles and a hat if possible.

See you all tomorrow!

Lesson 2: Home, Top and Bottom Row Keys (Consolidation)

Today in Computing with Mr Spracklen we consolidated our touch-typing work on home, top and bottom row keys.

We talked about the importance of 'posture' and looked at Mrs Troughton's workstation as an example of good practice.

When touch-typing, we had to remember to use the correct finger when typing.

Lesson 1: Home, Top and Bottom Row Keys

Today in Computer Science with Mr Spracklen we started our new unit of work on 'Touch Typing'.

Our aim was -

- To introduce typing terminology.

- To understand the correct way to sit at the keyboard.

-  To learn how to use the home, top and bottom row keys

We learnt about the importance of using the correct fingers when typing -

We then had a go at the following challenges -

To finish the lesson, Mr Spracklen introduced us to the '2Type Pop' game.

This is Mr Spracklen's top score -->

We wonder if anyone can beat Mr Spracklen score of 201 or his accuracy score of 94%?

Do let Mr Spracklen know if you can come close!

Year 3: Let 2022 begin!

Happy New Year!

We can't wait to see everyone tomorrow.

This week we will be looking at our New Year's Resolutions as well as the new Building Learning Powers character for this half term.

We will be going swimming this Wednesday. The children will need a one piece swimsuit, towel and goggles if possible. Please put this in a separate bag. On Wednesday mornings please could you let the adult at the door know if your child is being picked up at the swimming pool. This will be at 3.15pm, the rest of us will walk back to school and be ready for normal pick up at 3.30pm.

Any questions please feel free to email me: b.thorpe@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk

See you all in the morning!
