Year 3: Learning this week and home learning

 This week we have been writing expanded noun phrases using the pictures from our focus book 'Flotsam'.

For example: A craggy turtle with a mottled, coffee coloured shell. 

An expanded noun phrase adds more detail to the noun by using an adjective. 

In Maths we have been looking at unit and non unit fractions. The home learning sheet focuses on non unit fractions. We spent a long time yesterday going through these. The children should understand that they need to work out a unit fraction first. So they need to know for example what 1/4 of 20 is before being able to work out 3/4. To do this we find out how many 4s(the denominator) are in 20. Once we know what 1/4 is (5) then we x3 =15 so 3/4 of 20 is 15. 

The home learning sheet is here for anyone that did not bring theirs home. I can also print these on Monday. This Maths focus is on unit fractions.

Year 3: Brilliant Biomes!

Thank you all so much for supporting your child to make a biome. There still is time to do this. The information is below. If your child didn't write a letter to go with these then it would be great to have this. This is a competition run by zoolab, I have already sent pictures of the biomes and letters but would love to have letters for all of these. The children spent some time yesterday explaining about their Biomes with the class. 

We are going to be entering a competition and we need your help! We’d like you to make your own Biome in a box and write a letter to go with your biome to explain why it needs to be protected. For example you might build a rainforest or an underwater scene. 

What is a Biome?

A biome is a geographical region containing various ecosystems. Crafting a biome in a box allows pupils to delve into the complex ecosystems found in forests, freshwater environments, marine settings, grasslands, tundras, or deserts.

x using various eco-friendly and easily accessible materials. Pupils should be encouraged to look for items around their house and at school that can be repurposed, such as cardboard, paper, and plastic bottles and incorporate natural elements such as twigs, leaves, stones, and soil. 

Let the imagination run wild as you transform these simple materials into vibrant landscapes bursting with life. Whether you're crafting lush rainforests, arid deserts, or icy tundras, the possibilities are endless, mirroring the diversity of the natural world.

Please submit pupil letters alongside entries to ZooLab's Climate Crusader team explaining why they have chosen their biome and why protecting it for the planet is essential.We have no maximum size requirement on the Biome Builders entry, however we do ask that it is at a minimum the size of a cereal box.

 

Year 3: Clothes needed for the week ahead please

On Tuesday the children will have PE with Mr Treble first thing so please can we have all PE kits in. 

Following this session after break, we will be splitting the class in to two and we will be helping to build the new roundhouse. 

For this we need all the children to have home clothes and suitable shoes that you don't mind getting dirty.

Year 3: Year 3 assembly ✅

What a fantastic assembly the children put on this afternoon. They were all very keen to show the trial to you all and I hope you all enjoyed it. I'm super proud of every child who read their lines very confidently.

Year 3: Class assembly this Friday

 Just a reminder that it's our class assembly this Friday. The children will have their lines on them so no need to learn them at home. Assemblies now start at 2.30pm. After the assembly Ms Browne and myself will be showing the information about Hooke Court. 

In DT we are making pneumatic toys using egg cartons. We only have enough for half a class at the moment. If anyone has any please could we have them this week. 

In English this week the children are using the picture below to plan and write their own stories.

In Power Maths we are coming to the end of our mass unit and will start capacity by the end of the week. 

We had a great session with Mr Treble this morning where we practised sprinting, throwing, the sack race and relay. 

Year 3: Information about our learning and Parent info session

 Welcome back to the Summer term! 

This week we have started to use a new text in English. The interesting thing about our new story is that the book only has pictures! The children have been using the pictures to write their own stories. 

In Maths we are carrying on learning about fractions and have been looking at equivalent fractions. 

In Science this week we have completed a Science experiment looking at how we record an investigation into adding different vinegars to bicarbonate soda. The children were able to record in a bar chart their results. 

We have also had the life education visit where the children had to think about how they keep healthy. 

In DT we've started to look at pneumatic toys. The children have designed their own monster which they are going to start to make this week. We could love to collect any small cereal boxes and more importantly, egg boxes please. We will be using these on Tuesday.

PSHE - Poorly Giraffe

Today's PSHE lesson in Year Three began with an intriguing scenario: a poorly giraffe. -

This sparked a lively discussion among the students about illness. They pondered questions like: What illness might the giraffe have? How did it get sick? And most importantly, how might it feel or behave?

From there, Mr. Spracklen guided the class through a series of reflections on personal experiences with illness. The children shared what helped them feel better when they were unwell. They learned about the role of medicines in treating illness and discussed how some people need medication daily to maintain their health.

But the lesson didn't stop at treatment—it emphasised prevention. Pupils explored the importance of rest, sleep, hydration and nutrition in staying healthy. They discussed everyday habits like washing hands before meals, using tissues when sneezing and covering mouths when coughing.

To reinforce these lessons, the class examined government and public health campaigns on hygiene. By analysing successful advertisements, the children learned valuable lessons in communication and persuasion.
