Concerns over parking

As you are all aware, the school is fortunate to have a wide range of parking areas in its proximity. Due to the school's opening time, there is sufficient time for all parents and carers to access the  school grounds with their child in a safe manner.

Yet again it has come to the school's attention of what has been described as dangerous driving and also parking which is obstructing pedestrian walkways and crossings. This cannot continue.

We ask all members of our school community to follow the markings and ultimately think about road safety for our families too. Only a few months ago was there an accident outside a school in Weymouth.

The governing body are now looking into further action to be taken, the local Police team are also aware of this issue and are providing assistance with this matter.

Thank you.

Thank you for the Pies Year 3!

Mr. MacBean is out for revenge after the custard pie throwing session on Red Nose Day! (-Actually it was shaving foam.) Year 3 had obviously been saving their pennies for quite some time!

Mrs. Johnson, Mr. Gibson, Miss Kinkead and (especially) Ms. Brooker - barely recognisable at the end!/ were also pied!

Lots of fun was had by all - and pennies raised too!
Happy Red Nose Day

Year 3 Visit St. Mary's Church (24.3.17)

Today the children in Year 3 visited St. Mary's Church in Dorchester.
We were delighted with how well the children took part in the photo-orienteering activity that we did inside the church building; this provided an opportunity to look at the church in great detail. The children thoroughly enjoyed this.

We talked with Mr. David Bowden, a minister at the church, and found out about how the church was preparing to celebrate "Mothering Sunday" this weekend and Easter Sunday in a couple of weeks time.

The Stations of the Cross inside the church gave an ideal opportunity to retell the Easter Story.
Our thanks to those parents that were able to come along and help to run the visit.
For more photographs please see the Year 3 Photo Gallery.

Year 3 "Anglo-Saxon and Viking" Board Games

We have had lots of fun making our own "Anglo-Saxon and Viking" Board Games.

Mr. MacBean and Mrs. Bernard were really proud of the children for collaborating very effectively to get on with this activity. They made some excellent games and then played with these together very nicely.

See the Year 3 Gallery for more photographs.

Friday 24th March Church Visit and Red Nose Day

On Friday the children in Year 3 are visiting the St' Mary's Church in Dorchester.
We will be walking to the church at 9.15am and returning to school by 11.30am.
We are going to do some "photo-orienteering" within the church building; that is to say - looking photographs and trying to find where I was standing when I took them, and then plotting this on a map of the church.
We will also being looking at the "Stations of the Cross" (which are particularly nicely painted at St' Mary's) and talking about the Easter Story. The children will not be involved in any acts of worship at the church.
Friday is also "Red Nose Day"! The children have been encouraged to dress in something red, perhaps with a "funny accessory" (nose, or other) and bring a contribution to the Red Nose Day Charity Fund.
We will therefore be wearing our Red Nose Day clothing during our visit to the church.

Y3 Time - Mathematics

In our Mathematics lessons over the next week or so, we are going to be working on learning to tell the time.

The expectations of the National Curriculum for the end of Year 3 are as follows:
"Tell and write the time from an analogue clock, including using Roman numerals from I to XII, and 12-hour and 24-hour clocks."
"Estimate and read time with increasing accuracy to the nearest minute."
"Record and compare time in terms of seconds, minutes and hours."
"Use vocabulary such as o'clock, a.m./p.m., morning, afternoon, noon and midnight."
"Know the number of seconds in a minute and the number of days in each month, year and leap year."
I would greatly appreciate additional support from folks at home to draw the children's attention to "the Time" and practise "telling the time" whenever possible.

Year 3 visit some archaeological sites of the South Dorset Ridgeway

Well done to the children in Year 3 for the interest and enthusiasm they showed during our visits to the Ridgeway on Monday and Friday.

We had a quick look at the 7 Bronze Age Barrows that surround the Came Down Golf Club. Our thanks go to the manager for allowing us to visit.

We then went to the site of the "Viking Massacre" that we have been learning about, and looked at the new display boards.

We went to the Culliford Tree Barrow. This is an ancient Bronze-age Barrow that was also used as a burial place for the Anglo-Saxons about 1000 years ago. It is likely to have been around here that the Anglo-Saxons of the local area gathered for meetings and for special events (like deciding what to do with 54 captured Viking warriors, for example). It was thought to be a place of magic! The ancient people believed that faeries lived inside and that music could be heard coming from the ground! (We didn't hear any though).

Thank you to those parents who were able to come along for the morning and help on the visits.
An extra big “Thank you!” for Steve Wallis (county archaeologist) who gave us such interesting lessons in the classroom and who came with us on the visits .

Sustrans Big Pedal - School Assembly today

Sustrans “Big Pedal” – starting next week (lasting a fortnight)

Today in our school assembly we had a visit from Jonathan Dixon, our school’s Sustrans Officer. Sustrans is an organisation that promotes the use of Bicycles and Scooters.

Jonathan talked to the children about how to make sure their cycling helmets are fitted properly. He then introduced a special Sustrans event taking place over the next fortnight.
Next Monday sees the start of “The Big Pedal”.
We will be recording the number of journeys to and from school made on Bicycles and Scooters. The data is then used in a national and local competition to see which schools are able to get the greatest percentages of Bicycle and Scooter use during the fortnight.

In the last three years, we have done very well in this event and have been among the local prize-winners.
On Tuesday 21st March we are holding a “Bike It Breakfast”. All children that come to school by Bicycle or Scooter will be given a breakfast snack, fruit and a drink.

Year 3 enjoy interesting visit from DCC Archaeologist

Today the children in Year 3 enjoyed an interesting visit from DCC Archaeologist, Steve Wallis.
Mr. Wallis gave the children a general introduction to our rich local archaeological environment.

Next week, Mr. Wallis will be joining us on our trips to the Ridgeway to look at some of the ancient Barrows and also at the site of the "Pit of Doom" - the burial place of 54 decapitated Vikings, discovered during the building of the Weymouth Relief Road.

Year 3 Fun on World Book Day

The children in Year 3 have been having a great time dressed up as "Book Characters" today. There really were some fabulous costumes.
Our class winner (a very difficult decision for Mrs Johnson) was Emily for her brilliant Gingerbread Man outfit.

Do take a look on our Class Photo Gallery to see some more photographs.
