Home Learning Year 3 - Friday 20th March

Home Learning Year 3 Friday 20th March

1.    – I would like you to do some thinking!
Next week in class you will each be making an Anglo-Saxon/Viking Board Game.
The year is 1000 A.D….. The place is the South Dorset Ridgeway….. Anglo-Saxon settlements are being threatened by “Danes” from the across the North Sea.
The children will be creating a dice-board game that is set in this “scenario”.

Things to think about:
What are the rules?
How do the players use the “Chance” cards?
What “pieces” will the players use to move across the board?

You need not start to make your board game because will be doing this in class. However, you can start to plan some ideas and perhaps have a chat about your ideas with your family.

 2.    Spellings (Choosing from 4 lists as usual)
3.    Multiplication. Practise your “times tables” for the “test” next week. Are you choosing to do the test of the “2s and 10s” or the “3s and 5s”, or the “4s and 8s”?

4.    Growing a Bean. We are providing the children with a bean and a plastic cup. They will need to get some cotton wool, or blotting paper (+water). Watch your bean grow.

Year 3 Maths - Patterns in Number Sequences

In our Maths lessons this week, we have been looking at sequences of numbers and trying to find the patterns, in order to continue the sequence.
Here are some for you to try at home:

6    8    10    -    -

36    32     28     -     -

3   6   9   -   -

120   100   80   -    -

360    180     90

3    9    27    -     -

4    9    19    39     -     -         (tricky)

319    159    79    -      -        (very tricky)

Perhaps you could write some tricky number sequence for us to work out in class?

Two Year 3 visits next week. - St. George's Church on Monday, Maiden Castle Farm on Tuesday

Next week the children in Year 3 are going on two trips:
  • St. Georges Church on Monday morning.
  • Maiden Castle Farm on Tuesday morning.

I will be driving the minibus with half of the class to the church. This will be repeated for the second half of the class later in the morning. Those children that use wheelchairs will be going to the church using a special taxi-minibus. We will looking at the special features of this lovely local church.

We will be walking to Maiden Castle Farm to look particularly at the lambing. Please make sure that your child brings appropriate outdoor footwear to change into, and plenty of warm layers. We will be back in time to keep the usual arrangements for lunch.

Light - Year 3 Science Topic

We will be learning about "Light" during our next series of Science lesson.
Today we found out about different sources of light:
We learned that the Sun is our most significant source of light and that the Stars we see at night are also "Suns" that are millions of kilometres away.
We thought about lights that are made by humans; often powered by electrical energy.
And we saw an enchanting BBC video about glow worms and the way they produce light with their bodies.
Next session : Thinking about how shadows are formed, - and considering whether materials/objects are transparent, translucent or opaque.

Home Learning : Our Birthdays- Bar Chart

Dear Parents,
For their "Home learning" this week, I have asked the Year 3 children to make a bar chart to show the birthday months of the children in the class.
We have given them all a piece of squared paper to help with this.

We have also given out "Spelling Lists" as usual.

Many Thanks,
DM
