The Fiver Challenge -

A letter has come home via email to explain the groupings and possible Plan B.  Please see the attached document.  It is now time to purchase your ingredients and begin to make your products.  If you are planning a service you will need to look for any resources you may need to run it.

We look forward to seeing your products.

Times Table of the Week 5x table - How fast can you answer multiplication and division facts to 5x12?  Are you ready for a quick check?

How did I build MY learning powers?

The Fiver Challenge Timeline:

Week 1:  Look at examples of home learning and share ideas for businesses.  Pick a group to join.

Week 2 :  Finalise your market research, finalise your business name and logo and write your business plan (we will do this on Thursday).  Fivers will be given out at the end of the week to the groups. We will be doing this on Monday)

Week 3 (This Week): Design your products, Write your sales pitch and advertise your product / service.

Week 4 (Next Week): Budgeting, setting prices and planning pop up shop or service.  Buy your materials and begin to make your products.

Week 5 (Week beginning 5th July):  THE BIG SELL.  Each afternoon after school pop up shops will be able to open to sell their products.  You can open all 5 days or just some of them.

Week 6 (Week beginning 12th July):  Evaluate the fiver challenge and collect in money.

Every step of the way we would welcome adult’s help and support at home and at our after school pop up shops in the week 5 of the project.

Dear Parents

As you know, the fiver challenge is well underway, we have brainstormed, planned, replanned and hit plenty of hurdles already.  Such is life in big business!  There have been exciting highs and more stressful lows, but we think we have come up with a winning formula that allows everyone to be involved but to allay any anxieties and stresses that have already come to the fore.

First of all we need to ask you for your help.  Each of the businesses below require an adult to support them in buying any materials / ingredients for their final products, looking after their money and helping them sell the products in the week beginning 5th July.  If you are able to help, please write your name in the box below the group you wish to help or let a member of the Year 3 team know and we will send the £5 home so that you can buy initial supplies and work with the children to begin manufacturing any products they wish to sell.

Adults Supporting

The aim of the fiver challenge is for each group to maximise their profits.  This may mean that they have to buy more resources and manufacture more products as the week progresses using some of the profits they have already made.  We will allow each group time to set up each day that they wish to sell within this week, but would appreciate your support in helping them man their stalls.

We would also like to offer a plan B if your child is finding the process of this project challenging.  In addition to the above businesses we are also opening a whole class business called “The Buzz”.

“The Buzz” will be selling bee and pollinator related products such as those below.  Anyone can make a product to be sold on the stall.  Half of all profits will go to Dorset Wildlife Trust and the other half will go to the class treat fund.  We will spend some time in school making products for this business and it will support children in understanding that by working as part of a team we can do great things together!  This business will be led by the Year 3 team.  Those children that have found the group businesses difficult may find this a less stressful, alternative option.

Some ideas for “The Buzz” products:

Bee charm bracelets

Plants

Beeswax candle making

Bee pom-poms

Bee bookmarks

We hope everyone enjoys the rest of the challenge, don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Thorpe and Miss Johnson

Year 3 - Up and coming Jigsaw Lesson next week

As we approach the third lesson in our SRE programme for the summer term we thought that we would let you know that we will be discussing the elements of our Jigsaw topic "Changing Me" which might provoke some discussion at home.

The learning objectives for the next lesson are:

- understand that boys’ and girls’ bodies need to change so that when they grow up their bodies can make babies

-identify how boys’ and girls’ bodies change on the outside during this growing up process

-recognise how I feel about these changes happening to me and know how to cope with those feelings

Please feel free to contact us if you or your child need further support in discussing these matters further at home.  If you missed our parent information session at the beginning of this term and would like further information please also let us know.

The Fiver Challenge - An update

The children have been working amazingly hard and enthusiastically on their business plans week after a few changes of groups and ideas!

Unfortunately another curved ball has come our way!! Due to the rise in Covid cases in our area it is looking more likely that we are going to have to think of clever ways in which to promote our businesses in a Covid secure way.  This might mean offering an online ordering service and will definitely mean we are unable to offer food and drinks!

But we are year 3 and we are resilient learners and we won't give up!  We will work with each business this week to rethink their products and make sure everyone has a great product to sell.

Onwards and upwards!

Poster time!

The Fiver Challenge is well under way, we are just beginning to see how hard it is to make a profit from just £5!  We now need posters to advertise your stall to the rest of the school.

Can you make a poster for your stall?

It must show what you are selling, the price and when you are selling (5th-9th July after school).

Your £5 is also ready to be collected by your treasurer.  Make sure you have a shopping list of things that you will need to buy in order to make / create your product / service.

Y3: Fantastic trip and amazing swimming!

On Monday we walked to the new museum in town. I was so proud of how the class conducted themselves. We had a brilliant trip and the museum was fascinating. It really is worth a visit with the family. We only went in the Jurassic coast room but there are a number of other rooms to visit.

We had swimming this afternoon. And again I was so proud of how mature the class was. They walked lovely up there and listened well to their swimming teachers.

I hope you have a brilliant rest of the week
