Year 3 Home Learning with Remi and Reggie - 26th March 2021

Hello everyone, here are this week's home learning choices:

Year 3 #InspiredToLearn Home Learning - 25th March 2021

This week we have battled and built up our understanding through drama of what it was like to be a Roman Soldier or a Celtic Warrior.  We have also been thinking about how music and sounds can help us to learn as well as stop us learning as well.  We have introduced our learning powers characters to our home learning activities:

Reflective! Use what I know to move my learning forward!

Resilience!  Don’t give up, keep trying…….practice makes perfect!

Project with Remi

Practice with Reggie every day

Choose from:

  • Find three pieces of music that you enjoy listening to.  One relaxing, one that helps you focus and one that you like to sing to.  Write down their titles and the artist who performs them.

  • Write a poem about a Roman battle, it can be any type of poem you like!

  • Draw or trace a portrait of Boudicca.

  • 10 minutes TTRS or Mathletics

  • 15 minutes reading

  • 10 minutes spelling practice

Y3: The battle, skeletons and planting!!!

This week Year 3 have enjoyed being outside in our glorious garden. We have prepared a raised bed, planted a herb tray and planted wild flowers for the butterflies and bees.

In Science this week we have revisited the difference between an invertebrate and a vertebrate and started to learn about the human skeleton.

In Literacy on Monday we did some drama where the children were pretending to be Roman soldiers on the boat over to Britain, marching, in the fort and making the tortoise formation. Yesterday we learnt and wrote about some of the benefit of the Romans invading and today was the highly anticipated battle! We of course explained that there wouldn't actually be any contact made in this battle but instead we had a pretend one!!! There were some scary looking Celts and Romans! Thank you for all the hard work on the shields we really had such an amazing range of shields. We will share a video of this soon.

In Maths this week we have been adding and subtracting money. This has been quite tricky at times but we have been Regee the resilient Tortoise and persevered through the questions.

**If anyone has accidentally come home with a small blue watch in their bag please could you give this to a member of the team. A class member has lost it and would very much like it back. Thank you**

Hope you have a great rest of the week

Home Learning - 20th March 2021

Apologies for the late blog, this went out in paper form last week:

Year 3 #InspiredToLearn Home Learning - 18th March 2021Boudicca, Queen of the Iceni - Archaeology Magazine

This week we have been learning about Roman Soldiers and their training, where they travelled and what they might have eaten on their way.

This week’s home learning choices:

  1. Last call for shields!  This week we would like the children who haven’t yet done so to design and make a shield in readiness for our battle reenactment due to take place in the last weeks of this term, Romans v Celts (date to be confirmed).  Thank you to those of you who have already done this or joined in with the shield making taking place in school.  Hufflepuff and Gryfindor are making Celtic shields and Ravenclaw and Slytherin are making Roman shields.  We have had some wonderful examples so far, thank you!

  1. Find out 5 fascinating facts about Boudicca.  One of the resistant Iron Age Tribes who the Romans met on their journey through Briton were the Iceni tribe with their fearsome leader Boudicca.  Find out the best facts you can about her.

  1.  Trail Bread.  We have discovered that a Roman Soldier who travelled to Britain in 43AD didn’t have a very good diet!  They had to carry what they ate and that didn’t give them much choice.  Today we started making trail bread and experimented with flavouring it with other ingredients.  Here is the recipe - why not try your own trail bread recipe?  What would you add?

Year 3: Exciting link with another country!

This week we have started our new Money topic. The children have been working through questions where they have to try and make a certain amount of money using a number of coins. For example can you make £2.50 using 5 coins.

In Literacy we have been working collaboratively to research and write notes on what life would have been like as a Roman Soldier.

In Science the children have been learning about vertebrates and invertebrates and we went into the garden to find animals and categorise them.

Today something very exciting happened! We had a zoom call with a link school in Virginia, USA. The children asked them questions about their life and school and they asked us all questions. The children were amazed that they do not have TESCO and are 4 hours behind us. We look forward to developing this link in the future.

Just a reminder that Friday is Comic Relief. The children can come in home clothes. There is a cake and joke competition and you can buy your red noses from the office.

Home Learning - 11th March 2020

 Year 3 #InspiredToLearn Home Learning - 11th March 2021

Welcome back!  As we swing back into routine we are reintroducing home learning activities to support continued learning at home.  Now, we know you have probably had quite enough of learning at home and after our first full week back we imagine the children are extremely tired!  So, for the first four weeks the activities will offer some elements of choice and be very practical.  We will also begin spellings again to link in with the children’s new RWI spelling books which they will start next week.

This week’s home learning choices:

  1. Make Mum or Nan a special something for Mother’s Day.  This could be a picture, a poem, something to eat or you could plant a seed.  Take a picture of your lovely creations and send it to Mrs Thorpe or Miss Johnson.

  1. Money, Money, Money!  In preparation for our new unit in Maths why not go on a money hunt!  Count your pennies in your moneybox, see if you can identify all of the coins.  Play shops or have a go at labeling and egg box with different amounts, see if you can find the right coins to fill it.

Please return any home learning by Friday 19th March 2021

Science week so far: catapults and curly wurly stretching!

We are having a fantastic Science week and it really is a joy to see the children interacting and playing as one team. This week we have collaboratively made the building learning power animals (bee, spider, monkey and tortoise) which are now on display in our classroom. We will continuously refer to them and send MarvelousMe to you so you can see the brilliant work the children have been doing.

Yesterday in Science/Maths we looked and investigated 'the heavier the object the further it will travel, prove it'. We made catapults and tested which object travelled the furthest; a rubber, pom pom or a bead. The children then had to measure precisely how far each object travelled. Then we compared two of the lengths by converting the measurements into mm and subtracting them using the column method.

For today's Science task we took part in the whole school challenge: how far can you stretch a curly wurly? Each child had a curly wurly which they had to stretch as far as they could in 3 minutes. Trying to keep the curly wurly in one piece was a challenge! They then had to measure their curly wurly. As a class we then reflected on the process and thought that if the curly wurly was warm it might stretch further so we tested this. After putting it in the microwave for 5 seconds it was more stretchy however it was also more inclined to break! I believe the leader for today's challenge was 94.5cm!

Every Monday pm now until the Easter holidays all of us will be going outside so please can the children wear home trousers and have wellingtons in school. Please could the children also have their PE kits in school. PE this term is on a Tuesday and Friday.

We have some really exciting challenges for the end of the week!

Calling all Artists! An exciting opportunity with the Royal Academy! - 8th March 2021

 A #InspiredToLearn Artistic Opportunity

Now in its third year, the Young Artists’ Summer Show is a free, open submission exhibition for students aged 5 - 19 studying in the UK and British schools overseas. Artworks are judged by artists and arts professionals with selected artworks displayed online and on-site at the Royal Academy of Arts.

We just had to get involved!

Have a look at last year’s exhibition to get #InspiredToLearn:

https://youngartists.royalacademy.org.uk/exhibitions/2020

What is The Royal Academy Young Artists Summer Show?

Artists are at the heart of everything at the Royal Academy of Arts – they’ve been championing them since 1768 and firmly believe in nurturing young talent and celebrating the next generation of artists.

Taking inspiration from the annual Summer Exhibition, the Young Artists’ Summer Show is an opportunity for young artists aged 5 - 19 years to exhibit their work online and on-site at the Royal Academy.

The project is generously supported by Robin Hambro, a passionate advocate for the importance of access to art, and the benefits of encouraging the arts, for children and young people.

A panel of passionate and award-winning artists and arts professionals work together each year to select artworks to exhibit online and on-site at the Royal Academy.

Your artwork could be among those the judges select this year!

How do I enter?

We are registered as a school and you can submit up to 3 pieces of artwork, these can be works of art created at home or in school, in the past or something you are working on currently.  They can also be collaborative pieces that have been created by you with support of a group of other children.  There is no set theme or media for your artwork - It can be a painting, sculpture, photograph, installation, video, drawing, or a combination.

For each artwork submission you will need a jpeg image/s of the artwork along with details including a title, medium and a short description, child’s name and age.  Please see the attached guide for taking your photos.

Send your photos to a.johnson@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk

Please also complete the attached permission form and hand in to the school office.  Your picture will then be submitted by us and you will receive confirmation via a return email from us and everyone who submits work will hear from the Royal Academy by the end of May.

The closing date for submissions is 26th April 2021

The full terms and conditions are available on the Royal Academy Website.

What happens next?

Your artwork will be seen by a panel of judges and the selected pieces will be shown in our online exhibition. Some of the artworks will also be selected to be shown at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

Prizes

Prizes are awarded each year for two inspiring artworks from each key stage, as chosen by the President of the Royal Academy, and you can also vote for your favourite artwork in The Royal Academy’s annual People’s Choice Award.

Are you ready to be...

A note about tomorrow!

We can not wait to be together tomorrow and we have some fun collaborative games to start off the day. Tomorrow afternoon all of us plan to be outside and as long as the weather stays dry we will be having a fire so please can your child wear Forest School trousers  to school and have some wellies or sturdy shoes to put on. We have lots of wellies on the rack.  A coat or jumper that you don't mind getting a bit smelly from the fire or that you don't mind washing. If you wouldn't mind sharing this message with everyone please 😁

All this week we will be having mindful moments and trying to re-establish the routines of the class.

Roll on tomorrow!!!

Junk a go-go! 03/03/21

As we embark on our exciting Science week we are in need of some junk materials for a top secret collaborative engineering project.  We will need tubes (no toilet rolls), boxes, plastic pots, etc.

Due to current guidelines we will need to clean or quarentine these materials for a few days before we use them with the children.  If you have any of the above, please place them in the box outside the year 3 classroom by Monday 8th March.

Many Thanks

Y3: Last week before we see you all again :)

Apologies about not blogging very much last week but CONGRATULATIONS to Isla for winning the Year 3 part of the bird competition set by Mr Farrington what a beautiful Kingfisher it was! A massive well done to our highly recommended and anyone that took part.

The last week of distance learning school is upon us! I hope you enjoy the second week of Fairtrade fortnight. Next week we are looking forward to seeing everyone again and developing a school routine. We will be having a Science week next week and have many exciting collaborative learning opportunities planned so that we can move forward with the school year and adjust to being in a different environment.

I will still be doing the group zooms as I did last week and look forward to seeing all the children. If you do have any concerns or your child is feeling unsettled about next week please do contact me. It is a normal feeling to feel anxious when they have been at home with your family units for such a long time. We look forward to seeing them all and having them back together and we will work through the different emotions that the children will face.

And finally thank you so much for the delivery of delicious treats yesterday they were much appreciated!

Speak to you all very soon
