Recycling

Recycling Christmas Cards in the New Year

Please help us recycle your Christmas cards for the Woodland Trust Scheme.
We're asking you to recycle your Christmas cards to help us turn your cards into trees!

For every 1,000 cards dropped in to Marks & Spencer stores for recycling throughout January 2017, a new tree will be planted!

In the New Year, please bring any Christmas cards to the foyer outside the school office where there will be a bin. Do bunch these together and place a slip with the amount you are posting into our bin - this way the children will be able to calculate quickly whether we have collected enough to plant one or two trees. Please do not put loose cards in. The recycling bin will be in the foyer form the start of term. If you can, please do support this worthwhile venture. We will then make arrangements for the cards to be transported to Marks & Spencer at the end of the January 2017.

We wonder how many trees we can donate?!

Just to remind you that the children in Year 3 are having a "Party Lunch" tomorrow. The "party food list" has been up in the classroom for the week. If you are able to provide party food but have not yet signed up, we could do with some more sandwiches/rolls and salad.
There will be no hot dinners for Year 3. (These have already been cancelled.)

Year Three Class Photos - Gallery

Just a quick reminder that you can look at photographs of the children in Year 3 in action at school by looking at "Year Three Class", following the link from the "Class Photo Gallery" on the School Website (front page).
With the holidays soon upon us, this might provide a convenient way of the children responding to the question "What have you been up to this term?" - when they are asked by visiting relatives.

Technology day (9/12/16)

A ‘Christmassy, art and crafty’ day was enjoyed by all on Friday 9th December. It was the POW school annual ‘Technology day’ when children select three activities in which they wish to create a Christmas themed piece of art/ design work.  The manner in which children moved around the school, worked well within the mixed up age groups was superb. All children were displaying our resilient tortoise in tackling activities and the older children were lending a hand in helping organise the younger children’s work, showing the next steps in how to produce an item. Super skills from one and all! Some products made have been added to this blog.

Thank you finally to all parents who managed to join for some/ or all of the day, the extra pairs of hands very much helped!

Christmas Jumpers - Friday 16th December

Journey to the Stable - Year 3

Today the children in Year 3 enjoyed their "Journey to the Stable" experience at the United Church in South Street, Dorchester.
This was a lovely opportunity to learn about the Christmas Story and the celebration of Christmas.
Our thanks to Peter, Lynne, Brenda and colleagues for inviting us to the event and to Odette's Dad and Noah's Mum for helping us with the visit.

Christmas fair, 2nd December

What a busy, Christmassy feel to the school yesterday evening! The school was full of children and our families making the realisation that Christmas is nearly knocking on our doors!

The school would like to thank you for your support, for the goodies donated and for spending those pennies! All which will be ploughed into making the children's learning and environments a richer place to learn in.

A huge thank you also to everyone who has helped in preparing for the Christmas fair, preparations, laying out and running stalls to tidying up at the end. Thank you to POWSA.

Year 3 "Telling the Time" (2.12.16)

Next week in our Mathematics sessions we will be working on "telling the time" and finding out about units of time (seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years).

Well done Year 3 for an entertaining Class Assembly today

Well done Year 3 for an entertaining Class Assembly today. The Mums and Dad, Grandmas and Grandpas, children and school staff all thoroughly enjoyed the polished performance of "Jack Spice Sails with Sir Francis Drake".
We were all impressed with how well the children delivered their lines, concentrated on their miming, and sang so enthusiastically.

Year 3 - Exploring Healthy Food Options

Today in our D.T. lesson we had a go at making "banana open-sandwiches" using different types of bread and spread. We were finding out which option we thought was the most tasty and spending some time discussing which option was the more healthy.
We tried white bread, brown bread and seeded-bread. These were topped with butter, soft full-fat cheese or "no spread".
The "seeded, soft-cheese banana-open-sandwich" option was my personal favourite.

Costumes for Class Assembly – on Friday 2nd December

Costumes for Class Assembly – on Friday 2nd December

Dear Parents,

It would be great if the children could bring in a costume for their Class Assembly on Friday2nd December. They are all going to be playing the part of sailors on board a 16th Century sailing ship.

Tracksuit trousers and T-shirts would be ideal. Handkerchiefs over their heads might make a nice addition. Any that fancy a bit of face paint to add tattoos and moustaches would be welcome. As the children will be climbing on the PE apparatus, they will need to have bare feet. (They will not be allowed to use any toy cutlasses or pistols as they will need their hands free for climbing.)

We hope that you can come along to the assembly to see them in action.

Many Thanks
Duncan MacBean

Year 3 Writing Project - Jack Spice (Mon21stNov)

This week the children in Year 3 will be writing the story of “Jack Spice” and his adventures as a sailor (in the sixteenth century). This is tied in with our class assembly at 9.20 am on Friday 2nd December.
This writing will follow the “The Big Write” approach; where we are using drama to set out the story and encouraging the children to spend time talking over their ideas for their writing beforehand.

The story will be in the form of some diary entries at different stages of Jack’s adventures. There are various chapters in his adventures:
Being tricked on board the ship.
Learning to become a sailor.
Sailing around the World with Francis Drake.
The mutiny!
Battle with the Spanish Armada.

Home learning – Year 3 Europe Map Friday 11th December

Home learning – Year 3              Europe Map    Friday 11th December

The children in Year 3 have been given a map of the outline of Europe. I would like them to find where some of the countries of Europe are and label these on the Map. They may also like to shade in some of the countries with different coloured pencils.

I do not want the children to do all of the countries as this would be really tricky. (There are 51 independent countries in total – depending on one’s definition of a “country”.) They should try to select some of them.
How about 15?
Many thanks,
Duncan MacBean

Year Three - Home learning - Research about Nelson. Friday 4th November

Year 3 Home Learning Friday 4th November  - The Nelson Quiz

Find out the answer to as many of these questions as you can.

If you get stuck on a question, don’t worry, just leave it and go on to the next one. You don’t have to do them in the order that I’ve written them.

What was Nelson’s father’s job?
How old was Nelson when he first joined the navy?
What two significant injuries did Nelson get when fighting at sea?
How did Nelson famously ignore an order to retreat?
When was the Battle of Trafalgar?

How did Nelson send the famous message: “England expects every man will do his duty”?

How was Nelson killed?

Who was with Nelson when he died?

How did they preserve Nelson’s dead body so that they could bring it back to England?

Where is Nelson buried?

Where is the HMS Victory now?

Year 3 Praised in Assembly

Well done to these children in Year 3 who were praised in Assembly today for their hard work:

Christmas Card Orders

We received communication today that the online ordering for the Xmas Cards has now failed completely. The company are reverting to paper orders and a pack is being sent to school. As far as we are aware any successful online orders are still valid but all others will need to complete paper order forms and bring money to school. This is not an ideal situation; however, POWSA are at hand to help you solve any issues and can take cash or cheques.
So, on Friday 4th November and Monday 7th November before and after school, POWSA will be manning a table in the foyer where you can fill in the order forms and hand over cash or cheques.
We apologise for this inconvenience, however this is out of our control and are working hard to make the process successful!

Year 3 - Multiplication and Division - focus in Mathematics Lessons

Dear Parents,
Just to let you know that the focus of our work in Mathematics for the next few weeks is "Multiplication and Division".
We are always encouraging the children to learn their "Times Tables", but we will be having an increased focus on this at this stage in the year.

For your information, the Age Related Expectations in the National Curriculum at Year 3
"Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables."

Christmas cards order

Christmas card orders

Hopefully you have all received your child’s card design? You were given the information to order through the company directly on the back of the art work. The art work needs to come back to school to your child’s classroom, into their envelope - by Friday 4th November end of this week, ready to be sent off.

The company will be collecting on Monday 7th November from our school office, no set time has been given so it is vitally important the art work is back in the class envelope on Friday please.

We are hoping for the cards to be delivered back to school around 22nd November.

Home learning Y3 - Friday 21st October

Home learning Y3             Friday 21st October
Response to a “story introduction”.

The children have been asked to write the next part of the story, following on from this introduction:

I was feeling very odd when I woke up this morning. I was strangely hot and felt as if I wanted to scratch myself. When my alarm clock went off it actually scared me, and I leapt out of bed. I landed lightly on my feet.

When I looked into my bedroom mirror I couldn’t believe what I saw.
Could this be possible?
I had turned into a chimpanzee!!!

Bling Your Bike - Friday 21st October

“Bling Your Bike Morning”

Yes that is “Bling”, although we would like you to “Bring” your bikes too!

This Friday 21st October we will be holding another “Bling Your Bike” event. This is to promote “Being Safe by Being Seen” when out on your bikes and scooters. We are having a competition to see who can make their bike or scooter extra colourful and bright ,- so that it really stands out!

The children may score extra marks for having bright, colourful clothing that they can put on when parading their “blinged”-bike.

Children who would like to take part in the competition should bring their bikes to school on the morning of Friday 21st October. Winners will be decided during the day and we have some nice prizes, kindly donated by Sustrans

It is important that any materials added to your bike or scooter should not be in the way of moving parts.

Year 3 Bicycle Writing

This week in our English Lessons we have be using the theme of “Bicycles” to develop our writing.

The children had to collect facts about bicycles and group these facts into sections or paragraphs. A non-chronological report set out like this is more useful to the reader and easier to read.

The children in Year 3 have done some really good written work.

Do make sure you have a look in their books.

Yippee! The Book Fair arrives this week - perfect timing for some christmas shopping!!!!!!The children will all be visiting the book fair with their class, and I am sure they will come home full of excitement about books they have seen, so do pop along and buy a book or two!!!
We really appreciate the support you show us each year at the book fair, not only encouraging your child's love of reading but, every time you buy a book, we earn commission in vouchers to buy new books for the school library and the guided reading library. Great isn't it?

We rely heavily on this source to maintain a high quality, up to date library full of the latest reads and best sellers! This ensures that ALL children in the school have access to a well stocked library to explore and foster a love for books!

Thank you in advance for your support and generosity!
