What is causing the Rainforest to disappear?

Today Year 3 finished watching and making notes on a number of videos about the Rainforest. I wonder if you asked your child what is causing the Rainforest to disappear, could they tell you some of the reasons? This afternoon in their partners they made posters showing key facts.

In Maths we started Unit 2: Addition and subtraction. Today's lesson focussed on adding and subtracting hundreds for example 700- ?= 200. They needed to understand how to use a whole part model and read the questions to understand what it was asking them to do.

During our whole class reading session today we looked at adding speech marks to an extract from our story The Iron Man.

Hopefully you have all received the message about the farm trip tomorrow. The children can come to school in home trousers, normal school top, trainers and a coat. They can then put on their wellies to walk to the farm. Spare trousers might be a good idea as it will probably be muddy after todays rain! We have a few pairs of spare wellies on the rack outside the classroom if you do not have wellies.

Food and Farming Fortnight - 25th September 2020

Harvest time is here!

Over the next two weeks we will be taking part in a range of activities relating to farming and food.  Culminating in our virtual harvest (Friday 9th October) and Virtual Autumn Fest (Friday 16th October).
During the fortnight the children will be invited to dress like a farmer on Friday 2nd October and Year 3 will be off to the farm on Thursday 1st October.
For our farm visit, please could you ensure your child has warm clothes, wellington boots or appropriate footwear that you don't mind them getting muddy and a suitable coat.

Many Thanks, The Year 3 Team

A week of Awesome Progress - 25th September 2020

What  a brilliant week we've had in year 3.

We've written like we've never written before and retold the story of The Great Kapok tree using expanded noun phrases and speech punctuation independently in our writing.  So many children were so proud of what they achieved, they just had to read them aloud to the rest of the class.

Well Done!

We've experienced the deepest depths of the learning challenge pit in getting to grips with number lines to 1000.  With our 3 top tips we have conquered the number line and can now use it more flexibly when thinking about the value of number.

Our three top tips are:

1.  Look for the numbers at the beginning and the end.

2.  What is it counting in?

3.  Test it out.

We are coming to the end of our first unit in Power Maths for year 3 and all of the children are much more confident with the value of numbers and are ready for the next challenge!

Well Done!

So many children managed to get full marks in this week's spellings, definitely an improvement on last week.

Amazing!

Learning the French Alphabet was a fun on Thursday.  We spelt our names using the French Pronunciation of the letters.  Lots of children asked to take a copy of the alphabet home, just in case it didn't get there and they wanted to practice, here it is:

Magnifique!

Paper Rainforest plants, Happa Zoming, Harvest and Rainforest Songs and an extra reward playtime as the children completed the next part of the class reward chart completed our week!

Brilliant!

Finally here are the links to two songs that we are currently listening to and learning in school:

Let's Harvest

The Rainforest Song

No wonder they are so tired by Friday!  We are expecting even more amazing things next week.  Have a great weekend!

Times Table Rockstars - The Battle is on! - 24th September 2020

The battle of the bands is hotting up as year 3 and year 4 are tied at 1 battle each.  Who will win this week's battle to take the lead?  Only you can decide!  The scores so far look promising for a year 3 victory, but it could all change!  The more correct answers the more chance your class has got at taking the lead.  Keep your eyes on the Times Table Rockstars display for more certificates coming on Monday.  Want to improve your rockstar status?  Have a go in the Studio and set your rockstar speed.  Maybe you can become the next Busker?

We have given you two weeks for this home learning as it might take a little bit longer to create your masterpieces!

Amazing expanded noun phrases and clay iron men!

We have all been super impressed with the children's Literacy work this week! They have been focussing on expanded noun phrases linked to The Great Kapok Tree. We watched a catchy song that helped the children to remember what the rules are when writing an expanded noun phrase. Here is the link for you all to enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFJP1FNUEVY

Here are some of the examples from todays work:

The strong, hairy sloth slowly clambered down the tree to the logger. "Senor you can not chop down this tree, it is my home and I would not have anywhere to live".

The fierce, spotty jaguar ran up to the logger and growled "Senor you can not chop down this tree. We need these trees to live".

This afternoon the children used clay to make the main character from Ted Hughes book 'The Iron Man'. We were really impressed with their concentration, creativity and attention to detail when using the clay. Year 3 are really enjoying the story, we have just finished chapter 2 and are eagerly awaiting to start the next chapter to see what happens next!

It's great to see so many children reading at home and completing AR quizzes. We have a number of books now in our room which the children can access. They are are then left for 72 hours before being placed back in our library.

Times Table Rockstars - The Big Launch - 21st September 2020

 Welcome to :
At the Prince of Wales School we recognise the importance of children being fluent and flexible with their known number facts including times tables.  Times Tables Rockstars offers a fun and motivating way of becoming faster at recalling times table facts as multiplication and division calculations.  All children in years 2, 3 and 4 have access to this resource.

If you are not already familiar with this learning platform, here's some information to get you going:

Tables will be set either by the class teacher or by AI, and you can access the set tables by playing on either the Garage or in the Arena.  Other games will include a wider range of times table facts if you fancy a challenge.

Each week years 3 and 4 will be competing in a battle of the bands.  This works on the number of correct answers given by the whole class in the timeframe.  Well done year 4 for winning the first battle, year 3 are hot on your heels this week!  Year 2, once you've had a little practice you can join in too!

And finally, if you want to get even speedier at home it might be worth investing in a number key pad that you can plug into your computer via USB.  We use these in school and the children love to see how fast they can get!

Numeric-Jelly-Comb-Keyboard

For those Mathletes out there, we are still subscribing to Mathletics as well for years 1 to 4, so keep earning those certificates too!

Sunday 20 September 2020

Week 4: Year 3 learning for the week ahead...

This week in Literacy we will be learning about expanded noun phrases

We will be using these and the skills the children learnt last week about speech marks to write their own part of 'The Great Kapok Tree'.

In Power Maths we will be comparing and ordering numbers to 1000. The children will be using < > and = to compare the numbers.

In Science we will be planning an experiment, carrying it out and evaluating it. More information on this to follow!

Tomorrow the children will be learning the different between Great Britain, United Kingdom and the British isles using an atlas and online map apps.

We look forward to seeing you all in the morning

Home Learning and Spelling - 17th September 2020

                                                          Year 3 Home learning,

17th September 2020

To be completed by 24th September 2020.

Times Table Rockstars

When it comes to times tables speed and accuracy are important.  The more facts your child remembers, the easier it is for them to do harder calculations.  Times table rockstars is a fun challenging programme designed to help students master their times tables.

The battle of the bands has commenced!

Each week this term year 3 and year 4 are in hot competition to be the champions of battle of the bands.  The class with the most correct answers each week will be victorious.  All you have to do is answer as many questions as you can on the Times Table Rockstars platform.  In doing so you will earn coins to spend in the rockstars shop and improve your times table recall speed.  The faster you go the higher your rockstar status.  See if you can work up from being a Wanabe up to achieving full Rock Star Status!

There is a choice between single and multiplayer games.  If you stick with the games that have “Teacher Set” tables, they will test the tables in a specific order to make things easier!

The children should know their login details and a handy card will follow shortly.  In the meantime if you have any problems please email for password details.

Quick Quiz:

Can you write down three reasons why the rainforest should not be cut down? Use full sentences.
