Year 3: Information about our learning and Parent info session

Welcome back to the Summer term!

This week we have started to use a new text in English. The interesting thing about our new story is that the book only has pictures! The children have been using the pictures to write their own stories.

In Maths we are carrying on learning about fractions and have been looking at equivalent fractions.

In Science this week we have completed a Science experiment looking at how we record an investigation into adding different vinegars to bicarbonate soda. The children were able to record in a bar chart their results.

We have also had the life education visit where the children had to think about how they keep healthy.

In DT we've started to look at pneumatic toys. The children have designed their own monster which they are going to start to make this week. We could love to collect any small cereal boxes and more importantly, egg boxes please. We will be using these on Tuesday.

PSHE - Poorly Giraffe

Today's PSHE lesson in Year Three began with an intriguing scenario: a poorly giraffe. -

This sparked a lively discussion among the students about illness. They pondered questions like: What illness might the giraffe have? How did it get sick? And most importantly, how might it feel or behave?

From there, Mr. Spracklen guided the class through a series of reflections on personal experiences with illness. The children shared what helped them feel better when they were unwell. They learned about the role of medicines in treating illness and discussed how some people need medication daily to maintain their health.

But the lesson didn't stop at treatment—it emphasised prevention. Pupils explored the importance of rest, sleep, hydration and nutrition in staying healthy. They discussed everyday habits like washing hands before meals, using tissues when sneezing and covering mouths when coughing.

To reinforce these lessons, the class examined government and public health campaigns on hygiene. By analysing successful advertisements, the children learned valuable lessons in communication and persuasion.

Year 3: Farm trip photos and reminders about the rest of the week.

Apologies about not sharing these before. Here are some photos from our fantastic lambing trip to Maiden Castle farm. Thank you to Hazel for explaining to the children all about her different job roles and about lambing.

This afternoon the children had their free time for filling the house points up. Just a reminder that there is no swimming tomorrow. Instead the children have a Mary Anning drama workshop.

I hope you all have a lovely Easter holidays and I will see you when we get back. After half term we will have Forest School again and this will be on a Wednesday. Most children do have wellies here now so please do either keep these here or bring them every week.
We will also have our class assembly on Friday 3rd May at 2.45pm.

Year 3: Reminder about tomorrow and the learning this week.

What a fantastic week we have had ๐Ÿ˜€

The children have been using the story of Nen and the lonely fisherman, writing about how the characters felt. Yesterday we used the basic plan of the story to plan our own and today we started the writing. We can't wait to see how these turn out!

In Power Maths we have been calculating perimeter. Today we used lego to calculate the perimeter of squares, rectangles and then irregular shapes.

Just a reminder that it is our farm trip tomorrow afternoon after lunch. Children can come in their home trousers, trainers and please bring wellies. Hazel at the farm said it is very muddy so wellies are essential.

See you all tomorrow ๐ŸŒˆ

Monday 18 March 2024

Year 3: Round up of week 3 and details about week 4!

What a busy week we had last week!

In English we finished our writing using the text 'The cloud Tea Monkeys'. The children all wrote an information text about tea. This week we move onto a new text which we will focus on for the remaining weeks of this term.

In Power Maths we finished off our unit on multiplication and division and have moved onto learning about length and perimeter. Please do keep learning multiplications a focus though. In Year 3 the children should know their 10, 2, 5, 3, 4 and 8s.

In Science this week we have continued our work on looking at light and in particular this week we have been making shadows. Last week the children got to observe over time how their shadow changes, we will be using these pictures in our Science lessons this week to try and explain why the changes took place. The children also used their shadow puppets in the Science lesson on Friday and will continue to use these in the week.

It was great to see all of the costumes for World Book Day. Thank you everyone for supporting this.

A huge thank you to everyone that came in to be a 'mystery reader' and thank you to everyone that has messaged me since to offer themselves to be the next mystery reader. We'd love to make this a regular thing and so will give you some more details soon about the next times.

This Friday it is Comic Relief, the children can come in home clothes and something red if you have it. We will be collecting voluntary donations and there will be a cake sale after school.

The following week on the Friday (23rd) we plan to go to Maiden Castle farm in the afternoon. Wellingtons will be needed for the trip please but as we are not going until the afternoon children can come to school in normal shoes. School tops but home trousers are advised.

If there's anything you would like to discuss or anything we can support you with then please do catch either myself or Mr MacBean at the door in the mornings.

Year 3: Fantastic History trip

As you all know, yesterday we went to Shire Hall in Dorchester to learn about the Tolpuddle Martyrs. The children had a great time and got to walk in the footsteps of the martyrs. We learnt so much about them and we even got to act out the court case in the court that it was originally in! We will be using the knowledge gained during this trip to write about the Tolpuddle Martyrs.

Scary judge! She was very good at keeping order in the court.

In DT today the children have designed their castles which we will be making in a couple of weeks.

Just a reminder that you can access a range of e-books at home on Fonetti. At the moment this only works on apple and android apps but not on phones as the screens are too small for reading off. If you have any problems accessing this please do let me know.

Next Thursday (7th) is World Book Day and the children are encouraged to come dressed as a character from a book. Please be aware that this is a swimming day so we ask that the children do not have any face painting and they have clothes they are able to get off and dressed in or a spare set of clothes in their bags. If you would like to be a mystery reader we still have two days spare. If you could just email me please.

Year 3 Week 5 overview

Last week we had a busy week starting with out fantastic STEM KAPLA workshop.

During English last week the children were using conjunctions to describe what happened at the beginning of the story and the end. They also wrote a diary entry and letter to the 'tree grown man'.

In PowerMaths we have been using our knowledge of the times tables to answer reasoning questions.

In Geography we learnt about time zones and how this works.

In Art the children used their skills they have learnt on a final piece of art.

We have also been looking at what it is to be an 'Ally'. We have been watching daily videos and having discussions about what an Ally is and how some people in the world have privileges. We have begun to think about ways we can be an ‘ally’ to somebody who is different from us, who can find life a little bit harder.

Thank you all so much for attending the parent consultation evenings last week. If there is anything that you still want to discuss or would like anything to support learning at home, please do let me know.

This week on Tuesday we will be watching the Year 4 performance of MacBeth.

Year 3: An awesome Monday!

We have had an inspiring Monday with the arrival of KAPLA clubs. All the children in the school got to be part of this amazing experience. It was Year 3's job to build towers and then join them together to make a bridge! And what a bridge it was!! The children did brilliantly at following instructions from our teacher Jennifer and make some fantastic structures.

In English we have read to the end of our story and made comparisons of what the city was like at the beginning of the story and at the end.

I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow or Wednesday for parents evening. Please come into the classroom and wait for your appointment. We will leave the children's books on the table for you to look at.

Friday 26 January 2024

Year 3 : Week 4

This week we have been looking at:

We have used this book of poetry in English to write descriptions of a city, imaginary world and to develop our use of speech marks. We will continue to use this book for the next couple of weeks.

In Maths we have finished unit 5 on Multiplication and will be spending some time now looking at what gaps we still have before moving on to our next unit.

In Science this week we had a special visitor. Dr Higgins came in and gave a fascinating talk about our bones, the children recalled all of the facts today in Science! Thank you for coming to give a talk Dr Higgins, we linked this to looking at jobs and all the children now understand that a Doctor is also a Scientist.

In SCARF we thought about safe and unsafe behaviour and how to reduce this.

In French we were talking about the different items in a pencil case and asking what you have. This is why our home learning is linked to this French activity, we will use this on Wednesday so please could we have these sheets for then.

In Art today we learnt out the impressionist Claude Monet. The children learnt how to make different shades of blues to paint his famous picture 'water lilies'.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

We have an exciting activity happening on Monday as wea KAPLA workshop.

All parents are invited in at 3.15pm to view the KAPLA creations with their children. We cannot wait to see what the children in are going to make!!

Year 3: Week 3

This week the children have been working hard in English writing in the past tense. They have been writing the key facts of what happened to Ernest Shackleton and his crew on the Endurance.

In Maths we have been working through lessons using the 8 times tables. This has been a challenge and definitely something everyone can keep on practicing especially on TTRS.

In our SCARF lesson we were discussing the use of the internet and how not everything that is on the internet is true. We spoke about age rating in Computing and linked this with this lesson. The children understand that they should always seek help from an adult if something comes up on the screen that they are not sure of.

In Art this week we focused on the watercolour artist David McEown. He travels to Antarctica and the Arctic to paint. We used our skills that we learnt last week to paint a picture of an iceberg.

In Science we finished off out learning about health and nutrition and have moved on to learning about our muscles and this week we will learn about bones with a special visitor.

Parent's evening slots will open this week. If you cannot make any of the allocated times or think you would like a longer talk please feel free to email me.
