Year 3: The Fiver Challenge

Today we discussed the 'Fiver Challenge' which is an exciting opportunity for the children to work in groups to make and sell a product.

In our first session today we looked at key terms and brainstormed what they might like to sell. We spoke about what items might not sell and how some of the materials would cost more than £5.

Tomorrow we will be finalising groups and a letter will be sent home to explain a little further and the key dates.

In Maths this week we have started our new fractions unit. Today we were working through questions involving tenths.

The children also did their half termly AR test and should now have new AR numbers.

Please remember the children can dress in red, white or blue on Friday and have a royal themed lunch.

Year 3: 3C Maths books in this Friday please

After some consideration and talking to some of the parents I have decided to collect the Maths books in on a Friday to mark and then a new lesson will be set and sent home on Friday pm. Please send your child's 3C book back in their home learning folder.

Kind regards

Mrs Thorpe

Year 3 Home learning: Maths answers for lesson 1

Just to confirm that we will not be collecting the PowerMaths books in until the end of June. We will spend time then marking these so please don't worry about this. If you notice that your child is really struggling with this unit when you are supporting them through the lesson then please do let me know. Below are the answers for the first lesson. I will try to post these every Monday.

Year 3 Home learning: 20/5/22

This year we have spent a considerable amount of time working through and consolidating understanding in number and place value. After consulting Mr Spracklen and our Maths lead Miss White, and as mass is nearer the end of the year and unlikely to be covered before Year 4, we thought we would share the learning with you at home.

Over the next few weeks we will be asking you to sit with your child and complete one lesson per week (3 pages). We will set this lesson so please do not go on and complete other lessons. Please look after the book as we will be collecting them back in to mark and to carry on the work. At this point if any child needs so extra time on the mass unit then we will arrange an intervention time.

Please read this through with your child. This is an example of how to work out an answer. Then answer pg 101-103 in the Power Maths books. Mass lesson 1. Each week I will share another 'think together' page and give you the page numbers. As I have said to the children, please don't go ahead and fill in anything that hasn't been set.

I will only be setting Maths and spellings home learning for the next few weeks. But if you would like to access anything thing else then reading everyday is encouraged, TTRS and/or mathletics.

If you have any questions about this home learning then please feel free to email me.

Year 3: End of the week

We've had a brilliant and busy end of the week! In Maths we have finished our length and measure topic. Today's lesson was particularly tricky as we were problem solving involving two step problems. But the children worked fantastically through it using their BLP skills.

Next week we will start a new topic: Fractions. Below shows the mathematical language we will be using.

In Science we continue to monitor our plants that are in different growing conditions. The children noticed today that the plant that has limited light has turned from dark green to light green.

At the end of the day today after basketball, the children said their final goodbyes to our American zoom pals. We have just received their letters so will have a read of them next week and look at the videos they have sent us of their school.

We are really enjoying playing the Science quiz in class and just over half of the class have signed up. It would be great if we could get nearer to 30 at least! All children will be able to access this as you do have the option of the questions being read to you. Any questions please email Mr Spracklen.

Home learning is a little different this week so please see my next blog. A few children didn't get to show their creatures today so we will do this next week.

Have a lovely weekend!

Year 3: This week and a reminder about no toys please

This week in Power Maths the children have continued with the length topic. They have learnt this week how to calculate perimeter. Below is an example of the 'think together' page.

In Literacy they wrote their 'big write' which was a story about their mythical creature using this picture.

In Science we have been looking at which materials are reflective. Investigating which materials absorb light and which materials reflect it.

Thank you so much for the bunting that is coming in and the brilliant creatures.

Just a reminder again about toys and items from home. We positively encourage that no one brings in any soft toys or cards whether its football cards or pokemon cards. If you have any questions about this please feel free to email me or catch me at the door in the morning.

Next Friday (27th) we will be celebrating the Queen's platinum jubilee. The children can wear red, white or blue this day and have a royal themed lunch.

Year 3: Shadows, S'mores and more!

This week we have been experimenting with making different size shadows during our forest school session. As well as this we have had our class reward of s'mores! Thank you everyone for the amazing shadow home learning pictures that have come in this week 😁

During our Literacy session this week we have been thinking about mythical creatures and describing them using similes. The children designed their own creatures today.

Not only have we been looking at shadows in Science but also experimenting with what plants need to survive. We have set up an experiment that we are observing over time.

See you all tomorrow

Year 3 Home learning- Shadows

Year 3: A royal meeting!

Wow what a day! We are so incredibly proud of Year 3 and how they walked so sensibly and behaved so well at the Royal opening of the park today. His Royal Highness Prince Charles opened the park and then spoke to our class about their thoughts of the park. They all then got to have a play. We took our own ping pong bats and balls for a game!

This was a great end to a fantastic inspired to learn week. This week we have been designing our own dragons!

In Forest School the children even wanted to make their own fires so had a go with the flint and steel as well as carrying on with the whittling.

In Science we have been looking at shadows and how they are formed. We observed how they change over time and what makes them larger/smaller.

We hope you have a lovely weekend!

Year 3: Amazing learning!

Thank you to everyone that made it to the parent information session this morning. I ran through the learning that we will be doing over the Summer term and discussed the Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) that we will be covering in Year 3 over the next term. If you have any questions about this then you can catch me at the door in mornings or email me.

Today we came across a mysterious parcel and decided to open it! It was a book of mythical creatures. The children are very inspired by the book and will be using this for their writing over the next few weeks.

This afternoon in RE Sherif's Mum, Sherene came in and gave a fascinating talk about how and why Muslims make a pilgrimage to The Hajj. The children were so engaged and learnt so much. Thank you again Sherene for spending the afternoon with us.

In Science today the children used a secondary source of information (the internet) to research seed dispersal. I wonder if they can remember the 4 different ways?

See you all tomorrow for Forest School 🍃
