Recite a poem

Following our “Poetry Focus” this week, we are asking the children in Year 3 to have a go at “learning a poem off-by-heart”. 

They have had a look at various different types of poem this week and can now choose one from any style that they wish (- including one of their own creations). It shouldn't be too long.

They should practise saying their choice of poem  aloud with a view to saying it to the class.

Home Learning across the school!

Home Learning  - Harvest celebration

(week commencing Monday 5^th October)

 

During the week of Monday 5^th October as usual we have planned opportunities throughout the week where the children learn about: food and where it comes from, visits to Maiden Castle farm, creating art pieces, cooking, thinking about seasonal food, creating goodies for the Harvest café using our orchard goodies, looking at India farming and of course the reason behind Harvest itself!

 

We thought this year we would have a ‘Bake off’ format to the week as the ‘Great British Bake off’ has been inspiring staff as well as the nation!

 

So, if your child wishes to, the Home Learning for the children is to…

Create their own bread and bring into school through the week leading up to our Harvest celebration! The class will taste it and talk about how it was made.   Everyone will need to share the ingredients and how they made their bread (write down or be able to talk about).   ‘Bread’ products are wide and varied across the world, so experiment, create!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Through the week each class has also been set the challenge of creating a ‘master piece!’

 

These will be displayed outside of the hall for our Harvest celebration.

 We will have our very own ‘Mary and Paul’ to taste each class’s efforts and decide upon a winner! Be ready to ask your child all about it!

 

Poetry Focus

Poetry Focus
Over the next two weeks ,the children in Year 3 will be exploring some different types of poetry.
They will find out about how different poems follow different structures and patterns. They will find out what is meant by "syllables", "similes" and  "alliteration".
They will read a selection of poetry in their "Guided Reading" sessions.

They will be writing some of their own poetry too.

Maths - measuring length (m, cm and mm)

Some of our Maths sessions this week will be looking at measuring length. Here are some of the learning objectives:

I can measure lengths in cm and mm.       

I can measure lengths in m and cm    

I can use decimal notation to record lengths. (using m, cm and mm)
I can convert measurements between mm - cm/ and cm - m.
I can make sensible estimates of lengths.

Home Learning Year 3 - Friday 18th September

Dear Parents,
Kingston Maurward College are holding an exciting competition at their annual garden show.
The competition is open to all ages.
We thought that it would be nice to encourage the children in Year 3 to take part in this as this week's "home learning" activity.
There are two options for the competition:

 1. To compose some musical sound effects of Autumn and its weather.
or
2. To write and then decorate a poem about Autumn.
We have talked about this option in class and the children have made some notes.
As the entries need to be back at Kingston by Thursday 24th September, we will need the entries to be back here at the school by Wednesday 23rd September.

I have given the children an "Activity sheet"

To use knowledge of suffixes to generate new words from root words.

 

Using some words you know (called 'root' words).

Can you make new words from the root words and write them down.

 

Some examples

Child  - Childhood

King  - Kingdom

Nice  - Nicely  Nicer

Care – Careless  Careful

 

These suffixes may help you with the other words :-

-ship, -er, -ful, -est, -ness, -ly, -ment, -ish, -hood, -dom,  -less, -like

Humanities Lesson

Today the children in Year 3 enjoyed finding out about  the Abbotsbury Railway line. They looked at old photographs of the railway as well as some modern photographs that I've taken to show the bits of evidence that have been left behind. 

The Abbotsbury branch railway ran from Upwey to Abbotsbury. It opened in 1885. After a quiet existence carrying local passengers and agricultural produce, the line closed in 1952.

We talked about the changes in technology and how trains developed over that period, from steam, to diesel to electric. Other changes such as automatic doors and ticket machines were also discussed.

 

 

At the end of the month I will be taking the children to see some of the marks that the old railway line has left on our landscape today - bridges, buildings, a few remaining rusting pieces of track. We will do map work and stand at the places where the old photographs were taken to see what has changed - and what has stayed the same.

There was lots of interesting discussion during the lesson and I'm very pleased with the enthusiasm that the children showed.

  Following on from the work we have done in class - Create an informative poster to show “Rocks Are Really Useful”. Your poster should include labelled pictures/diagrams of some of things we use in our daily lives that are made from rocks. (Use the notes we made to help you.)

                Stone buildings can last a very long time. For a “Home Learning” activity this week, find the names of some famous buildings around the World that are over 1000 years old.

Swimming Lesson Arrangements – Year Three
On Thursday 10^th September we will be having our first Swimming session at the Dorchester Sports Centre (next to Thomas Hardye School, on Coburg Road).

Please bring your children to the Sports Centre by 8.45 a.m. Or, alternatively, bring them to the Year 3 classroom at school by 8.30 a.m. so that they can walk to the Sports Centre with members of staff in the Year 3 Team. Any children who attend “Breakfast Club” will walk up with the staff at 8.30 a.m.

We will be putting the children into “Swimming Groups” according to the information that we have received from you, and according to the ability level that they demonstrate in their first couple of lessons. This is how we will ensure that your child receives a lesson appropriate to their needs in a small group, taught by a qualified instructor. The instructors for these Year 3 sessions will be Mr. MacBean, Mrs. Sue Smith and Mrs. Nicole Smith. The Year 3 Teaching team will be present at the lesson to support in the pool and during the changing room time.

Please ensure that your child has the appropriate “swimming kit”: girls swimming costume (one-piece suit is preferable) or boys swimming trunks (not long-length beach shorts, please), a swimming hat (girls and boys) and a towel. Swimming goggles are optional. These items should be kept in a separate bag from their other school equipment.

Year 3 Parents' Information Session - Friday 18th Sept, 9.00am

An Information Session for parents of Year 3 children will be held in the school hall at 9am on Friday 18th September. Please come along  for more information about this terms learning in year 3.
