Writing a "Riddle"
I have asked the children to write a "riddle", - stating appropriate facts and “revealing them gradually”. They have written a “riddle” in this style at school, so they should make sure that they choose a different animal for this “home learning” activity.

Like in this example:

What Am I?
I am about 25cm long.
I build a large leafy nest by a tree or wall.
As an adult I live alone.
I can live in the countryside or the town.
I am usually nocturnal.
The cold is my worst enemy, then it’s motor cars.
Animals don’t harm me.
I eat snails, earthworms and insects.
I hibernate so I eat a lot in Autumn.
I am often covered in fleas.
To protect myself I roll into a prickly ball.

Year 3 - Fun Country Dancing

Unfortunately the Year 3 Athletics Festival had to be postponed today due to the rainy conditions making the ground too slippery.
Year 3 still had some physical activity and fun during their P.E. session in the Hall though.
We learned some traditional "Country Dances". We hope to show you these at some stage during the Summer Term. (And encourage you to join in, of course!)

Year 3 at DMS Athletics Festival on Friday 12th May

On Friday 12th May, we will be taking the children up to Dorchester Middle School to take part in an Athletics Festival. We will be walking across the Thomas Hardye School field, leaving at 9.15 and returning before lunchtime.
The children will be wearing their P.E. kits at D.M.S. They will need to have put on sun cream as usual; they will be encouraged to do so on arrival at school. A sun hat and their drinks bottle (which they should have at school) should also be taken.

Year 3 Home Learning - Wednesday 10th May

“Once Upon A Dream – Poetry Competition”

Following our lesson today (which used the Young Writers’ On-line Video Lesson), I have asked the children to write a poem for Young Writers' “Once Upon A Dream’ Poetry Competition.

With help from the BFP (That’s the Big Friendly Poet) the children were reminded about various possible poetic techniques that they might choose to use: - similes, imagery, onomatopoeia and personification.

They can write a poem about a dream they have had, or a dream for the future, or they could face their fears and write about a bad dream. Poems can be in any style.

We have given the children a copy of the entry form for the competition. We need to have this back to school by Wednesday 17^th May so that we can send the entries away in time for the deadline.

Home learning Year 3 – Wednesday 3rd May

Soil and Rocks
(- a bit of revision of work we did in the early Autumn Term)

 

Find a cupful of soil. Have a close look at it. (Perhaps you could use a magnifying glass?)                                    - WASH YOUR HANDS AFTER HANDLING SOIL.

What do you think soil is made from? Can you find out?

Why do you think different soils can be different colours; some are redder, some are browner, etc?

Can you find the name of SIX different types of rock?   (eg, Chalk)

Year 3 working with Year 9 and 10 students from THS

Today the children in Year 3 worked with students from Thomas Hardye School on the theme of "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle". We enjoyed the afternoon's session and it was nice to meet the students and take part in their "Eco-Activities".

Our thanks to Holly, Will, Amber, Henry, Robin, Emma, Bea, Anna, Tiger and Lorna, and to their teacher Miss Noble.

Year 3 Working with the RSPB

This week, the children have had an enjoyable and interesting time working in the school grounds with Emma Stephens from the R.S.P.B. She was ably assisted by Sue Howes and our special friend Peter Farrington.

On Tuesday, the children explored the mini-beasts and other wildlife in the school’s “Garden” area. They used identification sheets to find the names of lots of different little animals.

On Friday we ventured into the school’s pond and did some “habitat management”, which involved clearing the pond of excess plant-life to open up a larger area of clear water. We also had fun doing some pond-dipping and discovered lots of aquatic life in the pond, including lots of newts.
