Year 3: A busy week!

 This week has been full of excitement! 

On Tuesday we went to the Dorset County Museum to further our knowledge of rocks and fossils. 

We have been looking and testing the permeability and durability of lots of different rocks

We have had a visit from the Dogs Trust, teaching the children how to approach dogs safely. 

On Thursday we said goodbye to Miss Alston being our trainee teacher. Although she will be coming in voluntarily twice a week to be with us still! 

This afternoon we spoke about how to stay safe online and not sharing personal information. We spoke about how the children shouldn't be online by themselves but with their adults around them.

Year 3 Creative writing workshop yesterday and rocks!

Yesterday we were lucky enough to be on a workshop called 'The Bank of Dreams and Nightmares'.  The workshop was lead by Nick and Ed and their team of wonderful experts who inspired the children to work collaboratively to think of a beginning of a story. They needed to include all of the things that makes a good story. The story that they all thought of and voted for is truly unique and takes some strange twists and turns but it was clear to see that the children were passionate about getting their points across and they all wanted to have their ideas in the story.  Whilst the children were brainstorming ideas, there was a publisher listening on zoom who drew the pictures that matched their stories. Amazing! After a short break the children then got a very special booklet and pencil and got to write their own ending to the story. These story books will be printed and sent to us for the children to write their endings in.  We can't wait to share these with you in a couple of weeks. 

In the afternoon, the children were Scientists and took a closer look at a sample of rocks. In groups they then had to sort them. The children chose a number of different groups from sparkly/ not sparkly to describing the rocks texture such as rough, smooth, spikey. 

On Tuesday we will be heading to the Dorset County Museum in town where we will have a workshop on rocks and fossils. Depending on the weather we may have lunch out but we will make that decision closer to the day. Please can everyone have a packed lunch alongside bringing their water bottles, suncream and hats. We will be walking down so if anyone if available to walk with us and spend the morning with us that would be fantastic please.

Year 3: Fantastic trip!

 

Hi everyone, 

Year 3 had a wonderful time discovering all about fossils of marine reptiles at the Etches collection museum in Kimmeridge on Tuesday. We were able to hold and look at many fossils through a microscope including an ammonite fossil, a plesiosaur and t rex tooth. We discussed the Jurassic coast line and the children used their knowledge of rock formations such as Durdle Door and Old Harry rock. 

This week, the children have been using their new knowledge about Mary Anning and fossils in their very interesting and detailed writing.

Y3: Kimmeridge trip on Tuesday!

I hope you are all enjoying this beautiful weather we're having during the half term. Just a quick message to say that I'm hoping you've seen the letter regarding the Kimmeridge trip on the first Tuesday back (6th). It has been loaded onto pay360 and permission will need to be granted for your child to attend.

 Children should wear their normal school clothes and bring a snack and packed lunch. We will not be going to the sea, this is a museum set back in the village. It's a fantastic way to start our topic learning about fossils.

If you would like to accompany us on the trip then we can take two helpers. Please just drop me an email on b.thorpe@princeofwales.dorset.sch.uk and I can let you know if we still require the help.

Year 3: Thank you!

 Thank you so much to everyone that was able to attend our learning exposure this afternoon. It was lovely to see so many families and Mr Spracklen, Mrs March, Ms Evans and Miss White came and saw the children's work also. I hope you enjoyed seeing your child's hard work in a variety of different subjects. As Mr Spracklen said, the children's handwriting is amazing and I am so proud of everything that they have achieved so far in Year 3. They have been so passionate about saving the Rainforest and this shows in their leaflet and persuasive letter writing. We wanted to do our bit to support the Rainforest and so this morning we made Palm oil free cupcakes. Thank you to everyone that purchased one or even one of Jessica's delicious cookies, we made £50 which will be donated to 'Amazon conservation' which is a charity that supports different projects in the Amazon.

Year 3: Spellings

 

Year 3: Busy learning and writing!

We've had a busy couple of weeks! Thank you to Sherene and Sarah's Mum for coming into class to talk about the Islamic pilgrimage to the Hajj. The children learnt about The Five Pillars of Islam. 

In Science we have been learning about the life cycle of plants. We have replanted our Science experiment and have put the pumpkin seeds in the poly tunnel, hopefully we'll be able to plant these soon into our pumpkin patch. 

In English we are working on our leaflet all about the Rainforest. We would like to invite you into school at 3pm on Wednesday 24th May so that the children can show you their leaflets and letters as well as looking at their other work they have been concentrating on this half term. If you can make this or even cannot make this then please can you let a member of Year 3 know. We can arrange for the children without any parents/ family members to share their work with, to share their work with a member of staff or another set of children in the school and they can bring their leaflets home. 

Our author trip to THS yesterday was so inspiring. Cressida spoke so enthusiastically and all the children were engaged with her talking about the books she has written and that have been made into films.
